FORWARD Sometimes, we prefer a private nighttime prayer, a moment of reflection wrapped in confession; and sometimes the pleadings, thanks, a praise, recalled scripture, supplication and moments of silence that echo what we think, feel and hear will suffice. Sometimes... For other times, the Office of Compline holds a special place in the life of disciples and catecumens. And so, a primer. Dr. Marshall Thomas | OPENING PRAYER God, who covers us this night, help us receive Your instruction to enable us to know, understand, discern and, by Your wisdom, accept what is revealed about Your perfect ending to our day. Amen. All our help is in the Name of the Lord; maker of heaven and earth. Jesus, have mercy.

I Congregants assemble in silence L Our Lord God, help us receive what is ordered for us, a restful night... peace. C Amen. Jesus, have mercy. L Give thanks to Almighty God, sing praises to the God of our salvation, such that God sees it is good. C Sing praises to the Most High God. L Proclaim Your perfect love in the heat of day. C Whisper Your everlasting truth as Your earth cools and night descends. | 5

III (Kneel or Sit) L Let us humbly confess our sin that we and Christ, our Confessor, may reveal who we are as God sees us. C In that humility, most holy and magnificent God, we confess we have sinned against you by word, thought, deed and omission - all known to You. In the name of the risen Christ, we ask for Your forgiveness. Help us receive Your absolute deliverance, so that, by Your Grace, we may serve You restored, at peace, every morning. L In God's mercy we are united with Christ who forgives us and gives us rest. (Read Holy Scripture | Page 13 | Closing: Thanks be to God) | 9

IV, V, VI (Congregants sit and read or sing one or more of the following appropriate PSALMS) [Please Refer to Page 13] Silent Meditation follows each Psalm. Psalm Response [Page 13] appropriate to each Psalm rendered as recited or read following each silence C Amen. L You are in our midst, Lord, and you have named us Yours; do not forsake us, O Lord our God. (JER. 14: 9) L Peace is My parting gift to you, my own peace, such as the world cannot give. Set your troubled hearts at rest, and banish your fears. (JOHN 14: 27) | 11

You redeemed me, Lord, our God, our Truth. Help us receive Your covering, Lord; we hide in Your shadows. Jesus, have mercy. | COMPLINE Close of Instruction - Prayer Let our whispers, cries come unto You as we learn Your ways. Your presence, merciful God, protects us this night. We who come here weary of changes and chance, tho' tired - find our rest in You in the folds of scripture, hymnody, prayers and petitions - eternal proclamations that serve us well in repetition, in deep reflection, in quiet company with one another and You. This much we know without full comprehension in Christ Jesus, but by Grace alone we are assured that refreshing sleep is Your blessed gift given so we may be renewed for service in Your Holy name. Jesus, have mercy. Amen. | DEDICATION To Rev. Dr. Tom Larsen Ruth E. Anderson, AiM Cynthia Faudree Jean Grupe Jean Musolf Karen Ramage Charles Landon serving Trinity Lutheran Church ELCA | Galesburg, IL

COMPLINE a primer Study Guide The final service of the day. The designation "Compline" was derived from the Latin word completorium. By most accounts, it began as a private custom of saying a prayer before retiring to rest for the night. Some historians ascribe the origins of Compline to the Western practices of St. Benedict (6C). His "Regula Benedicti" refer to Compline in chapters 16, 17, 18 and 42. Others ascribe its beginnings to the Eastern practices in Callinicus (1C), referring to a service called prothypria - a service that preceeded the so-called first sleep in the monastery. This practice was instituted in the 4C by St. Basil. | Today, some orders of monks begin their revered "Great Silence" following Compline - the practice whereby monks observe silence from the benediction at Compline to the opening of morning prayer. For Anglicans, the order of service is often observed as a combined form of Vespers and Compline that becomes Evening Song (Book of Common Prayer). The service has taken on modern forms, and in many instances, can be led by a lay leader. Many Lutheran expressions use Compline as an alternative to Vespers. Compline is the fastest growing service in the USA in terms of followers and worshipers. | 14
