FC: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
I feel the combination of my ancillary texts and my main product are effective. They work well together and attempt to make my artist successful with the début single 'skinny Genes and album 'Pack Up'. The continuity of the feminine and playful based theme represented in the music video and both ancillary pieces, make my media pieces look more effective. Usually pop/indie-pop artists are stereotyped as young girls with lots of energy such as Miley Cyrus and Pixie Lott are key examples of this pop genre stereotype.
As you can see I have conformed to this stereotype as the lead actor in my music video is a young girl. The feminine and modern clothing worn by my artist in the main task and in the ancillary texts is effective as the mise-en-scene and the connotation of the style is consistent and therefore effective. When looking at other pre existing media products I found that pop/indie-pop artists are shown to wear fun and fashionable clothing. A key example of this is Miley Cyrus who is seen wearing trendy outfits that are interesting and eye catching.
Using one actor in my main task and ancillary tasks make my media pieces stand out from existing media products as my artist is the narrative and the performer whereas the typical pop conventions use several actors for narrative and performance. The visual shots of the artist in the main piece and ancillary pieces create a continuity and let the audience become familiar with the artist thus creating a para social relationship that allows them to relate to the artist and ultimately boost reputation and record sales, this shows how the main task and ancillary texts work well as an effective combination.
I found this to be a popular technique for example with Jessie J's poster, album pack and is the protagonist in the music video she is shown continuously reinforcing the audience that she is the main focus. This shows that the combination of the media pieces are effective and cohesive.
As my artist conforms to aspects of pop/indie-pop such as her age and clothing I felt that the name of the artist should be something catchy and quirky so I chose to use alteration as the name of the artist is 'Frances Faith'. The use of alliteration in pop artist stage names are a common convention as it adds to the quirky and playful vibe of the genre therefore verifying the genre.
This shows that I attempted to show the show the genre clearly in the main task and ancillary texts through the use of clothing, age, gender and stage name so that my media pieces are consistent. For all of the listed reasons I feel that my main product and ancillary texts are effective. | Skinny Genes by Frances Faith
