5: Journalists who wrote about the corruption and scandals that happened in the industries.

6: Goals of the Progressives

7: Progressives wanted the government to intervene with big business to give the small people a chance. | 1. Encourage morality 2. Promoting social welfare 3. Encourage efficiency | 4. Creating economic reform

8: Roosevelt

9: Preferred to regulate corporations for the public welfare rather then destroying them. | Approached social problems, big business, and labor unions.

10: Taft

11: Supported the 16th and 17th Amendments | Established new agencies (Bureau of Mines), which set standards of mine safety and The Federal Children Bureau. He tried to be equal with the employees, but later favored the companies.

12: Wilson | Underwood-Simmons Tariff was the first law to substantially lower rates in 50 years. The free list of goods was expanded to iron, steel, raw wool, and sugar. To make up for the revenue shortfall it ratified the 16th Amendment.

13: Brought the Democrat back to power since Civil War. The election represented the political resurgence of the South. | He showed little interest in the social concerns in his first year.
