Basic Information on Secretariat | Born on March 30th, 1970 at The Meadow Stables in Virginia. | Height: 16.2 hands (each hand is equivalent to 4 inches) | Weight: 1200 lbs | Sired 653 foals 57 of them were stakes winners | Died on October 4th, 1989 at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky.

Secretariat | Bold Ruler's owner, Ogden Phipps, chose to have an unusual stud fee for his stallion. It was a coin toss. An owner would send a mare to Bold Ruler two years in a row. The coin toss would decide which foal Phipps would keep and which foal the owner would take home. Phipps won the coin toss between him and the Cherenys' and chose Secretariat's older sister. The Cherenys' were left with the unborn foal of Somethingroyal, who would soon come into this world as Secretariat.

"When you're smiling, keep on smiling, the whole world smiles with you." | The Meadow Stables Family | Ronnie Turcotte | Penny Tweedy | Ron Turcotte is the jockey who rode Secretariat to victory in all of his races. | Penny Tweedy is the owner of Secretariat and The Meadow Stables. When her father, Chris Chereny, died she inherited the farm but had to sell of much of the stock to pay the inheritance taxes.

MAKING MEMORIES | Lucien Larin | Lucien Laurin is the trainer at The Meadow Stable and of Secretariat. He was hired by Penny Tweedy after his son was offered another training job at a more prestigious stable. | Eddie Sweat is the groom for Secretariat and several other horses at The Meadow Stable. He was hired by Lucien after dropping out of school after his sophomore year of high school to help support his family.

Secretariat went into the Kentucky Derby with no fan support. He had just lost The Wood Memorial, the final prep race before the triple crown. Coming into the Derby many people were putting their money on Sham, Secretariat's arch rival. Secretariat went onto win the Kentucky Derby over Sham by two and a half lengths. His fans had faith in him again after this win. He was highly favored to win the Triple Crown. | To win the Preakness, Ron used a new tactic. Instead of waiting until the end of the race to ask his horse to run full speed, he asked for speed in the middle of the race. After he reached the lead he kept it, winning the second jewel of the triple crown. Secretariat normally runs last until the very end, where he will gallop to the front. Secretariat won the race by two and a half lengths, beating Sham for a second time. After the race there was a controversy with the time in which he ran the race. Many racing professionals believed the official time was wrong, that he had actually ran a faster time and beat the track record. The official time was never changed but many still believe that Secretariat had broken the track record, which had been set in 1971.

Secretariat came off a great run in the Preakness to win the Belmont Stakes. He won it in an incredible 31 lengths. He set a world record time for the distance of a mile and a half. Ron had ridden Secretariat differently in this race then he had the past two. Secretariat was guided into the lead at the very beginning of the race. Sham tried to keep up with him but Secretariat was moving at too fast of a pace and Sham eventually tired to last place. This race became the most famous and memorable Belmont Stakes. It still is, no one has beat Secretariat's record for the mile and a half. | Secretariat's Triple Crown

Characters | Chris Chenery is Penny's father and the previous owner of The Meadow Stables. In 1968 Chris became ill and was admitted to the hospital, where he would stay for five years until his death. He successfully ran The Meadow Stables for over 30 years and was a prominent figure in the horse racing business. After his death many of his stock had to be sold to pay for the inheritance taxes. A syndicate on Secretariat was sold for $190,000 a share, before he even raced as a three year old. | Jim Gaffney was hired by Lucien as an exercise rider for his horses in training. Secretariat was one of the horses Gaffney rode and they got along very well. He retired after Secretariat won the Triple Crown.

Ogden Phipps was the owner of Bold Ruler. He lost Secretariat to Chris Chenery during the "coin toss" where he chose to keep Secretariat's older sister, named The Bride. | Seth Hancock was the owner of Claiborne Farm, a prestigious breeding and training farm in Kentucky. Hancock played a major role in the syndication of Secretariat. He sold all of the 32 shares. Under the syndicate, each shareholder would be able to send a mare to Secretariat each year after he retired from racing at age 4.

Secretariat after the Triple Crown | After winning the triple crown, Secretariat ran in six more races, losing two out of the six. He was retired as a four year old because of the guidelines in the syndication.

In the last two races of his career Secretariat ran on the turn, the inner grass-like track. He proved that he was able to win on the turf just as well as on the dirt. Many horses are only able to win on one of these surfaces. | In 1989 Secretariat developed a condition in his hooves called laminitis. This condition is often non curable and can be very painful. He was euthanized on October 8th after the condition did not improve.
