FC: Trans Atlantic Slave Trade | By Tia Barfield
1: The Atlantic slave trade was an act that took place from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The reason why the trade began was because expanding European empires in the new world lacked a work force. Europeans were not suited to the climate of labor and suffered many tropical diseases, however the Africans were great workers and were used to the tropical weather.
2: By the 18th century, a large part of the European population were descendants of slaves. In many societies the number of slaves determined a man's social status, which is why domestic slavery was one of the most common forms of enslavement. Severe form of slavery existed in west Africa. Slaves were usually men and women taken during war, while in other parts slaves were born in the master's home. many times slaves born within the master's household were treated better than those that were captured, often times a slave could rise to higher positions or even buy their own freedom.
3: However a master had full power and could do with the slaves whatever he wished. And if a master would chose to kill a slave he could do so without question. The Trans Atlantic Slave trade is cloaked with disgrace due to inhumanity of treatment of the slaves. the degradation of slaves of the slave trade was what made people to believe that slaves were nothing more that commodities.
