FC: Soulful Lessons From The Sea

1: The Beach has been part of my life since I was a little girl. I remember walking the boardwalk, playing miniature golf, days on the beach with friends and family and building incredible sandcastles. As a teenager my boyfriend and I got up early in Philadelphia and drove to the beach. We'd lather up and spend all day catching rays. We came home with extreme sunburn. My boyfriend and I married when we were just 19 and 21 and the beach remained a priority. When we didn't have any money we'd pack a day's worth of food and drive to the ocean. We'd change our clothes in the car and drive home. It was heavenly. As the years passed and our finances matured we would take the children to the beach for long vacations. It became their frame of reference too. During our midlife crisis the beach took center stage. My husband became very unhappy with his business career and fell in love with his seaside photographs. In our innocence, we took a leap of faith and returned to poverty so he could satisfy his artistic dream. Life became full of art shows, publishers and private and corporate sales. His images were printed as posters and sold worldwide while his original prints enjoyed great success. Unfortunately in 2003 Alan Gross passed but his images will live forever. As I look over his work and our lifetime of seashore memories I realized that we didn't just play at the beach, but there were many lessons we learned from our experiences. I'd love to share these lessons with you as I show you Alan's beautiful and loving images. I hope you enjoy them and I hope they inspire you to experience more joy in your life. Alan Would Love That!!!!! Susan J. Gross

19: When I was nine my parents took me to the seashore for a two week stay. It was the first time that I had spent any period of time at the beach. I found that to me this was a place of sights, sounds, fragrances and experiences that created memories that would influence me for the rest of my life. This was the seashore of the 40's where the boardwalk hummed at night and french fries were sold in paper cone cups salted to saturation. There were glorious sounds of the seagulls, smells of the ocean, sand, jetties, suntan lotion and the morning mist. It was delicious. This is the seashore I remember and this is the seashore that I seek to recreate in the photographs I make. I hope you see a place of serenity, beauty and romance..... A simpler place in a simpler time. I hope you enjoy the work..... Alan Gross | © Alan Gross Images 2012 alangrossimages.com
