3: THE THOUGHT... Rob says, "we should hike the AT". Bernadette says, "the what?" Rob explains and then says, "if we start now and hike it in sections...we'll be done by the time i am 65yrs old". Bernadette says, "sounds like an adventure!" | THE ADVENTURE... The Appalachian Trail 2,200 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. The AT passes through 14 states...Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachuesetts, Vermont, New Hamsphire and Maine LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN!!
5: Feb 5, 2011 We hike Low Gap Trail, 2.9 mi, located in the Smokey Mts. to put our 1st steps on the AT. We purchase a jet boil...cook up some home hydrated stew | and starbucks via coffee. NOTE: Rob has trekking poles and bernadette does not! We were thrilled to step in snow! We are hiking in Doc Martins! | Low Gap is a killer climb...2.9miles which climbs 2200ft in the last 2.3 miles! We still use Low Gap Trail to kick start our hiking season!
6: Feb 2, 2011 first hike on the AT... Max Patch to Lemon Gap, NC | Max Patch... a grassy bald great view of Smokeys, Mt Mitchell and Mts upon Mts
7: We enjoyed the snow the walk the woods and the ruddy, muddy ride home!!
8: Feb 19, 2011 day hike...6.6miles Garenflo Gap, Tenn to Hot Springs, NC
9: We get new hiking boots and rob practicing his orienteering skills Bluff Mountain and Spring Creek River We discover a Geocache at the end of our journey
10: 3/12/2011 Day hike 7.8 miles Lemon Gap,NC Bluff Mt | To...Garenflo Gap, Tenn
12: At the base of Mount Cammerer is a small town called Cosby. Cosby, TN borders the Great Smokey Mountains. We set up a small camper at a campground while we hiked the AT in The Great Smokey Mountains.
13: We set up base camp at THE COSBY RANCH | we would get there friday night and hike all weekend. A GREAT TIME!!
14: Davenport Gap to Max Patch Rd April 1-4, 2011 Our 1st overnight hike. And a memorable one at that....started out as a spring day, encountered rime ice and woke up to thunder snow. The trail starts in the woods at Davenport Gap with elevation of 1975ft. | The trilliums blooming | The spring waters overflowing | The redbud trees blooming
15: The trail is full of surprises... as it turns along the road we see a bushel or 2 of potatoes... then there's a policeman giving someone a ticket... and as we start up the mountain there are convicts cleaning up trash!!!
16: We start our ascent up Snowbird Mountain We get into snow and encounter rime ice. It was so gorgeous!

18: We hiked 9.5 miles and stayed at the Groundhog Creek Shelter | Fire, Water and Food. Did have a thru hiker, Good Chuck, join us | DEEP GAP
19: woke up to thundersnow. hiked in lots of mud and the wind was howling thru the woods | we were very glad to reach... Max Patch Bald
