This book is dedicated to all kids who have ever felt left out.
The little pandas had fluffy white ears and tiny paws.
Panda Elementary | I went to a school with all pandas. I always wished I could be like them.
 But I could not be.
 Because I am an elephant
I have long legs, a big body, and rough gray skin. My mom says I am cold and rough on the outside, but I get people, I give great advise, and people trust me.
But no one ever saw that side besides her.
Doug honey! Wake Up! | "Doug Honey! Wake up!" called out my mom early in the morning. I rose from my slumber stretching out my arms.
 "Urg," I grumbled, "It's Monday."
I arrived at school late, as usual. I thought I could make it too my class on time, but i didn't care.
"Hey Doug!" yelled Larry the panda. "Hey Larry," I replied in a low voice. I know he was making fun of me, I thought to myself as I arrived at my classroom.
I began to put away my backpack when I noticed one of my classmates point at me, then the whole group he was with started laughing at me. Those guys are so mean, I thought as I lumbered to my seat.
Before I sat I looked left, then right, then left again. I wanted to see if anyone was watching. When the coast was clear I shoved my large body into the tiny desk that was obviously not meant for someone my size.
Ms. Chow | When my teacher, Ms. Chow, began to teach, my desk began to wobble.
Bang! The sound of my desk braking and me slamming to the floor echoed throughout the room. I was too fat. Everyone started laughing.
I forced myself out of the stupid desk and ran out of the school, through the playground, and into the bamboo forest.
I ran as far as I could before loosing my breath. I rested on a tree stump. I cried for a long time.
I wiped my eyes and looked to the ground. A lizard was staring at me. "Hey buddy," I said quietly.
"Hello," replied the lizard. "Woah! You can talk?" I answered in shock. "Yes Doug, I can speak. I am your conscience, I am here to help you," declared the lizard cooly. "That's awesome!" yelled Doug. "Yes, very awesome. Though, we are here to talk about what happened in school today," explained the lizard, "I know you were very embarrassed but you have to do something for me."
 "I'll do anything," I answered.
The lizard explained, "Doug, you have to think back from the beginning of the day. No one would ever say hi to you to make fun of you, in fact, the panda who said that, Larry, would love to be your friend. When you put you backpack away the panda who pointed at you was telling everyone how funny you were. When you broke your chair, you imagined the laughter because you were so embarrassed, for nothing! Everyone loves you Doug, you just have to love yourself. Accept yourself Doug."
"Accept myself, I'll do it," I whispered to myself. When I looked up the lizard was gone. Just then, Larry showed up and asked me if I was okay. Of course I said yes and we went back to school. Larry and I became great friends. It was like I had a whole new life.
And everyone saw my heart of gold.
