FC: The Life of Pablo the Balloon By Sheila Barrios
Dedicated to my dear friends, if you read this you will know who you are Copyright 2012
“Boom, poem, boom.” These are noises I hear as I am being finished. I am in the factory being made and watching others being made as well. I see different colors of thing that look just like me. The people around me are putting objects in packages. The smell of rubber kills me. I despise it very much, but then again I am made of rubber. When they are finished with me they will put me in a box and ship me off to a store. As I was in a box on a truck I started to talk with another object. It turned out that we were going to the same place.
When we got to the store I realized that this object and I had more in common than anything else I had ever met. I was very hungry and in a bad mood. “Mommy look a balloon!” I heard a child say this to his mother. The little boy was about five and was wearing an orange short sleeve shirt. He also had a friend that was about the same age. The little boy also said, “Can I have it mommy? Please, please, please.” I was getting excited and when his mother said yes I was even more excited. I would finally have helium in me. You may not know this, but I am a balloon. After watching the little boy and his mother wait there patiently, they took me to the car to take me home. I was put in the trunk of the car and was feeling squished because the ceiling was pushing onto my side. When I got to their house I saw many people there. It was as if they were having a family event. It made me realize how human life is different from my life. At the party I started talking to another balloon. He told me how much he liked the party. The family reunion was nice. It was at a big and beautiful backyard. The setting was basically perfect.
After having a good conversation, I started to play with a little boy. He was laughing and having a good time. I didn’t choose to be balloon, but if I wouldn’t be anybody else. I love making little kids happy. I feel that when they are happy I am happy too. While the little kid was playing with me I had a feeling I was going to be let go into the air. Many balloons have different instincts. My instinct is knowing when I am about to be let go into the air. As the family started to eat I was let go. Even if I had only known the little boy for a short amount of time he was already my friend. I knew I would miss them, but this was when my journey began.
“HEYYYYY!” I heard someone shout. I didn’t know how to respond to this. At first I thought I was hearing things, but then I saw a green balloon. “Hello my name is Pablo. What’s yours?” I asked. “My name is Paco.” He replied. After talking with him for a while I realized that he was at the same party that I was at before. He was a green balloon and was the same age as I was, but he looked older. Usually when balloons look older than they are it is because they are losing helium faster than they are supposed to
He was a green balloon and was the same age as I was, but he looked older. Usually when balloons look older than they are it is because they are losing helium faster than they are supposed to. We passed by many places before we decided what to do with the rest of our lives. Usually a balloon lives to be filled up with helium and be taken to a house. Only they lucky balloons are found and play with humans once they have already started to lose helium. “Hey I have a great idea.” Said Paco. “What are you thinking?” I questioned. “Well, I think we should do something for the summer. We should go to the Caribbean.” He replied.
Weeks later we were there. We were both at the Caribbean. I loved it because it was like nothing I had ever seen before. The ocean was a crystal blue color. The sand was a golden color. It wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too cold. I saw people enjoying their free time. I also saw many boats there. Over all, the setting was perfect. “Last night I slept by the beach. It was completely relaxing. The ocean breeze was warm and hearing the waves crash on the sand was amazing. I also felt the mist of the warm water on my face.” As I described this to Paco as he stared into space as if he was imagining the setting. “Wow I was the one with the idea, but it looks like you are enjoying the trip more than I am.” Replied Paco. We felt the weeks pass by quickly and sooner than ever it was time for us to go home.
By the time we got home the season was changing. Nature was changing from summer to fall. I like the summer, but I absolutely love the fall. I love feeling the cool breeze and see the trees changing color. Sadly Paco isn’t here to see this with me. Before we were able to get home he died. I was sad at first, but then I realized that everything dies at one point. The fall mornings are the best because it was cool and foggy. A lot of times I wish someone would see me and I would be able to play with them. I feel lonely and sad to know that my days are ending slowly. I see people walking and driving past me, but nobody takes me with them.
“Hey look, a balloon!” I heard a little boy shout. “Let’s take it home with us.” I heard another little boy say. They were both playing with me on their front lawn. I was found by another person and am being played with. After the sun set one of the little boys left his friends house. He didn’t know to whether to take me home or leave me with his friend. The little boy did what he thought was correct. He left me with his friend because his friend was the one who found me.
When he took me inside there were other people in the house. The house smelled clean and also looked clean. The people inside the house were having a good time. As I started to play with the kids I realized that I was losing energy. I was feeling tired and weary. Soon everyone was losing energy and I started to hear people popping balloons. At first I was scared, but then I thought maybe it would be best if I died. I will miss all the experiences I’ve had while living. Even if they are all memories anyway I will miss all the things I learned and all the people or things I interacted with. I knew this day would come, but I didn’t expect it to come so soon. “There is one more left.” I heard someone say.
“I know. I will get that one in a minute.” I heard someone reply. I saw someone coming towards me and I knew that I was about to die. I smelled the rubber of the other balloons. I despise that smell as I despise being alone. When a balloon dies there are ten seconds before he really dies. “POP!” I heard this noise and realized I had just died. In these ten seconds I knew that I would miss the life that I had and wish I had time to do more.
