 The Second Coming

Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand; A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I | In Summation: | Stanza 1: A falcon flies out of earshot from its human master. level. The falcon has gotten itself lost by flying too far away. Yeats suddenly shifts into a description of "anarchy" and an orgy of violence in which "the ceremony of innocence is drowned." The speaker laments that only bad people seem to have any enthusiasm nowadays.

Stanza 2: The speaker takes the violence which has engulfed society as a sign that "the Second Coming is at hand." He imagines a sphinx in the desert, and we are meant to think that this mythical animal, rather than Christ, is what is coming to fulfill the prophecy from the Biblical Book of Revelation. At line 18, the vision ends as "darkness drops again," but the speaker remains troubled. Stanza 3: The speaker refers to a prophecy that the beast is on its way to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ, to be born into the world.

Tone : eerie, creepy, dark | Speaker : 3rd person; narrator | Form : Iambic Pentameter / Free Verse

5 stylistic devices: -imagery: "The blood-dimmed tide is loosed..." -symbolism: "The ceremony of innocence is drowned" -Repetition: "Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming!" -Rhetorical Question: "And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?" -Alliteration: "centuries of stony sleep..."

"The Second Coming" Compared to Brave New World"

-In the 1st stanza the speaker refers to a violent orgy. This reminds me of the giant violent orgies the community took a part of in "Brave New World". -The author also points out that only bad people seem to have enthusiasm these days. This reminds me of Brave New World because the characters in that book got ecstatic over the drugs, sex, and violence.
