FC: The unfortunate accident

John Smith is one of the best mountain bikers around. he has one many races and is about to face his hardest.

The race starts out well john pushes hard and works his way to the front and begins zig-zagging his way through the course. he is doing great and | was flying around the course when an armadillo ran out in front of him. he swung out wide to avoid hitting it and

his front tire caught a root and threw him forward. he landed on his foot with a sickening crack.

He pushed himself up and looked down at his leg. it looked like he had broken the bone in his calf. one of the race officials ran over to check on him. "can you walk?" he asked He shook his head no. The official picked him up and carried him to the medic. he was so frustrated at his misfortune and disappointed in his failure.

When I got to the hospital they took me back to get x-rayed. they gave me some pain killers to make it easier on me. When the doctor came back in the x-rays he looked sympathetic. "it was a clean break. we can get it set in a cast and cruches and you'll be just fine," he said. "How long before i can ride?" "twelve weeks would be my guess."

As i left the hospital in a cast and on crutches i thought about how bad my luck is. The thing i have always tried hard at and excelled in has been taken from me for a long time. When I could ride again i would be very rusty. I would have to work very hard to get back in shape if i wanted to enter in the race next year. That would give me around eight months to do some amazing things. But first i need to rest and recover.

Twelve weeks later after the cast had been removed I went out to ride and see what kind of shape I was in. I started out slow hoping to pace myself so I could finish

the ride. It was long and tiering but It was doable. Over the next six months I focused on getting my stamina back and getting into shape again. When I had finally gotten into decent shape again i worked on speeding up my time little by little until I broke my personal record on the track. I was so pleased with myself that i went home to register for the race in two months. Confidant that I would make it this time.

When the day of the race came I was so anxious to start but nervous of what might happen. They called us to

the starting line and we all lined up ready to go. When the gun sounded I raced off the start and managed to make it to third place when we reached the trees. We were | weaving in and out so fast you hardly had time to think. When we reached the corner the road was clear so i pushed ahead as fast as i could

I blew past the other racers and kept increasing my lead. when it came to the final straight away a rider had caught up to me and we gave it all we had each person | trying to beat the other. As we crossed the finish line neither of us knew who one. The judges were looking over a video to see who had one.

The judges watched for what seemed like an eternity. When they finally turned around i was so excited i could hardly contain it. "and the winner is John."
