FC: The world is on fire for smoking. | By: Austin Starnes

“Ew did you see that guy smoking?” “It is disgusting, he also smells really bad” “I even heard he was diagnosed with terminal lung and heart cancer yet he is still smoking, poor thing.” Smoking, it is one of the most addicting, repulsing, and dangerous habits that there is. | t the others around them, friends, family, your employees and sometimes even the random pedestrians that happen to walk by. The problem with smoking is that it is so dangerous it hurts all who are around it and I think the only way to fix the problem would be to ban smoking in all public places.

The lesser of the two evils of smoking is easily the social facet of it. Smoking can cause horrible physical defects that can result in harming your social life. The smell is horrid, so bad that it can dispel the best of your friends from your presence. The smell of smoke can stay on clothes for weeks at a time and is the hardest thing to try and get off your clothes.

Other ways that smoking can harm your chances of a better social life is the way that it leaves your teeth a mustard yellow color; this is a result of the tar that is found in nicotine. Just imagine putting the same tar that the put out on street on your tooth brush and brushing your teeth with it. | Smoke can also cause your hair to become brittle and coarse this is a result of all of the chemicals that are put in your body. Your body is fighting to survive by using the proteins to help fight it. It’s a losing battle; all the chemicals that are in smoke eat away at proteins leaving very little for your hair and nails.

If the social aspect of smoking is the lesser of the two evils of smoking what do you think the worst is? If you said the physical you are right. There are two main types of smoking sidestream, and mainstream smoke. Mainstream is one of the worse for you as it is inhaled directly and you take a lot of the chemicals. The worse part is the sidestream or second hand smoke this smoke though and is contains a much high concentration of cancer causing agents this is why second hand smoke is so deadly. One cigarette contains over 7000 chemicals, 250 of them have been proven to be harmful to the human body, 19 of those are cancerous. When taking in sidestream or secondhand smoke you receive almost 85% of all of these chemicals and 90% of the cancer causing chemicals. Most of these chemicals are considered to be Carcinogens, a carcinogen is any cancer causing agent. | Dimitrios Trichopoulos was the first person to study Second hand smoke and its effects on people. He proved multiple things very quickly, such as the fact that a smokers partner is twice as likely to develop and cancer than a non smokers.

Studies since then have shown that secondhand smoke leads to lung and other cancers, heart and respiratory diseases, as well as SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Second hand smoke accounts for almost 3,000 Lung cancer deaths, 12,000 other cancers, 37,000 heart disease cases, and 700 SIDS. This came from the Coalition on Smoking OR Health a group formed by the American Lung and the American Heart Association as well as the American Cancer Society. This accounts for almost 53,000 American die each year from secondhand smoke alone, all that death from people who had never even picked up a cigarette in their life.

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States it accounts for almost one out of every five deaths every day. So is it so bad to ask some people to wait until they are at home to light up a cigarette? Can someone wait an hour to save two or three lives? So stand up and make a statement to big tobacco companies. Get them to ban smoking in ALL public places. One quote one said “Nicotine patches are great put one over each eye and you cannot find your cigarettes.” Another one is that “Smoking is the number one cause of statistics.” Don’t be a statistic.
