FC: This Old House circa 1910 2011 Alabama History Fair | by: Konner Knight Watwood Elementary School Childersburg, AL

I am Konner Knight and I am 10 years old. I have lived in Childersburg, AL all of my life. A picture of my house is on the front page. It is 100 years old. This is the only house I have ever lived in. I love my house. | IF my house had eyes you could see the family who built it in 1910 and their two children. You could see their grandmother who donated land to the city for a park. IF my house had eyes, you could see my family who bought the house from the family who built it. You could see how it became a boarding house during the 1940's. IF my house had eyes, you could see all the people, parties, the funeral and graduation class celebrations it has seen. I WISH MY HOUSE HAD EYES!

BENNETT ALLAE ALFORD AND CLAUDIA MAE HUSTON Married on June 28, 1906 This is a picture of the people who built my house. Bennett Alford sold cotton. His wife Claudia died on July 7, 1911 about 1 year after her house was built | 1st Owners The Alford's

THE CHILDREN WHO LIVED IN MY HOUSE IN 1910 VIVIAN ALFORD And JAMES HUSTON ALFORD We don't know how old they are here but my Mom told me you had to have money to dress like this and have nice pictures made in 1910.

There is a picture of my house in this book written by Mrs. Downs. She and my mom were on the Childersburg Historic Commission together and they worked on fixing up the Rainwater Museum. My brother used to play in the Rainwater House while mom worked.

THE ALFORD BRYANT VEAZEY KNIGHT HOME A 1910 Queen Anne Victorian Original cost to build - estimated at $2,500.00

2nd Owner Jeff Bryant's | The 2nd owner of my house was Jeff Bryant Uncle Jeff was my Great Grandmother, Suzie Mae Bryant Veazey's , brother. Uncle Jeff bought my house from Bennett Alford when he got married again and moved to Albertville, AL. We do not know what year Uncle Jeff bought the house. My Great Grandmother Suzie Mae lived in my house for a while to help Uncle Jeff take care of his children after his wife died. His wife is pictured on this page. I never met my Great Grandmother. | Mrs. Jeff Bryant

SALLY WEST PARK Claudia Mae Alford's mothers name was Sally West Huston. She donated some land to the City of Childersburg to make a park. The people of Childersburg were thankful and named the park after her. The Coosa Garden Club took the land and turned it into the park we can play in today. It is next to the Catholic church. I am Catholic so that's neat. | RIGHT: My Great- Grandmother Suzie Mae Veazey

We called him Paw Paw. He was my Great-Grandfather. Paw Paw was a postman, farmer, Childersburg City Councilman, deacon at the First Baptist Church and local business owner. I never knew Paw Paw. Pictured on the next page at the top is my Paw Paw watching the new mayor, Mr. Robert Limbaugh, becoming the Mayor. On the bottom right is my Paw Paw in his younger years when he owned Veazey's Grocery. He also owned the Shell gas station downtown. The other pictures are of my grandfather, Robert Eugene Veazey. I call him Paw Paw Bob. He lives in Dothan, AL. | The 3rd Owners were my Grandfather Robert E. Veazey and My Great Grandfather Wallace H. Veazey

3RD OWNERS The Veazey's Wallace and Bob | Robert Eugene Veazey "Bob" or Bobby" | Wallace Bryant and Robert Eugene Veazey

This is my Great - Great Grandmother. She was known in the family as Big Mama and they said she was the boss. Her last name was Bates and the area in Childersburg known as Bates Edition is named after her and Grand Daddy Bates. Big Mama was a business woman. Du Pont bought land from Big Mama in 1941 to build the Ammunitions plant. A top secret plant located here in Childersburg during the WWII.

The Ammunitions plant increased the population of Childersburg from 500 people to 14,000 almost over night. | Restaurants and boarding houses popped up all over town to provide shelter and food for all of these people. | Part of my house was turned into temporary rooms for people to sleep

4th Owners The Knight's | My Mom and Dad bought our house from my grandfather in 1990 for $1.00. The house was junky and scary. My Paw Paw Bob was afraid that it would be vandalized or the city would want to tear it down. The house sat there empty for 10 years. Before that it had been rented to lot's of other families. One family had started burning stuff from the house for firewood. After that happened, Paw Paw didn't want to rent it anymore. He boarded the windows and it sat waiting for us to restore it. | This picture was painted by Mrs. Agusta Poe from Childersburg

This is a picture of my mom and dad, Roland and Kim Knight. The Historic Preservation Commission gave my parents an award for restoration of a historic residence. Polly Holiday gave them the award at a fancy banquet. Everyone was very excited she was here because she is a famous movie star that grew up in Childersburg, AL. She was the grandmother in Tool Time, the next door neighbor in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire and Flo on Mel's Dinner.

Our house has been on the Childersburg Tour of Homes two times. My mom enjoyed fixing up our house so much she became a member of the Childersburg Historic Preservation Commission. The Commission used to have a tour of Childersburg houses at Christmas to raise money to fix up the Butler Harris Rainwater Museum. It needed a lot of work. By getting our house decorated for Christmas and sharing it with everyone, we helped restore the big Rainwater House on the hill here in Childersburg. | We got the Camellia Award for having our house on the Christmas Tour of Homes. The plaque is on the wall in our living room.

If my Old House could talk!

This was our Christmas Card one year. That funny shape at the bottom of the front door was me watching my mom take a picture of the house. I had my whole face pushed up on the window.
