S: Jarnagin Family Vacation 2011 - San Antonio, TX
 The Jarnagin's Texas Adventure July 9 - 16, 2011
First stop was Dallas! | The kids had never seen anything like the "Mix Master."
We spent the evening driving around DeSoto so that David could show the kids the town where he spent 8th - 11th grades. We saw some old friends and had a good trip down memory lane! | 614 Faye This is the house David lived in. | This is the Desoto High School Football Stadium. It's changed quite a bit since the 1980's! | 508 Ida Bess Meme & PawPaw lived here for many years. It still looked very much like it did when they lived there.
Let's just say we didn't diet on this trip! One of our favorite parts of this vacation was all of the fun and good places to eat. Whataburger was everywhere - and it tasted great after a long, hot day at Sea World!
Taco Cabana was our new favorite fast food. We were so sad to learn that it were not any locations in AR! Then there was Snoopy's on the beach, Braum's, and Big Lou's Pizza.
First start on the eating tour was Black's BBQ in Lockhart, TX. First we stopped in Austin to get Andrew & Andrea. We were actually headed to Smitty's BBQ, but Smitty's was closed. We wound up at Black's. We couldn't imagine Smitty's being any better! | Everything we had was delicious - baby back ribs, beef ribs, sausage, & brisket!
David and Andrew got the beef rib - it was the biggest rib we had ever seen. | We saved that big beef rib bone to bring home to Lucy. She was in doggy heaven!
The Alamo was neat. It was a lot smaller inside than we expected. | Before we toured, we watched an Imax movie about the battle. Mollie was a little dismayed to learn that "we" didn't win!
This was the monument in front of The Alamo.
These trees were huge - as was the cactus!
We couldn't tell if this bird was real or not - he was so still! Braden figured it out really quick.
We took a ride down the Riverwalk. It was fun, and we enjoyed getting some San Antonio history (the 7th largest city in the US in 2011). The statue to the left is Saint Anthony of Padua. The statue below was just a neat looking bridge!
From top left: A mosaic on the side of a building, Mariachi band at Rita's on the River (where we ate), Marriage Island (1 of top 10 wedding destinations in world), waterfall, funny little faces all around the outside of a building, The Emily Morgan Hotel.
We decided to take a day trip to Corpus Christi - it was about 2 hours away. It was really windy, and we all got sunburned, but it was a fun day! Our friends the Mainords let us borrow their wakeboards and we had a lot of fun trying to use them.
Standing at the end of the pier. It was really beautiful to look out at the ocean from here! | Braden & Mollie decided that they could be beach models. Some sample shots here...
Scenes from the pier - we enjoyed watching the seagull hunt!
A funny thing happened on the way to the beach... an earing fell out of Mollie's newly pierced ears! We found the earing, but we couldn't get it back in the right way. She wore it backwards the whole day. We went to Claire's the next morning and got it re-pierced. It was quite an event!
We ate dinner at Snoopy's on the beach. It was really good, and the view was fantastic. Mollie had all the shrimp she could eat, and Braden decided he didn't care for fried oysters!
We went tubing on the Comal River. It was really a lot of fun, and very relaxing. There were a few rapids and some slides, but for the most part the water was slow. We made out trip to TX during one of the worst droughts in recent years, so the water was pretty low. This picture was taken by a man who lives near the river. He takes pictures and puts them on a website for people to purchase.
Big Lou's Pizza - Home of the 42" pizza! Big Lou's is famous for this gigantic pizza - it was featured on an episode of Man v. Food. Our friends the Mainord's took us. They used to live in Cabot, and now live in San Antonio. They had never been to Big Lou's either, so we were all shocked when this pie was placed before us! There wasn't even room on the table for our drinks and plates! We didn't eat it all - the Mainord's took a few pieces home, and we took a few to the hotel. We took the picture of the statue on the left because it reminded us all of David Bogard in VBS this year as Sheriff Tweedle!
Sea World of Texas! We spent part of 2 days at Sea World. The first afternoon we went to just watch all of the shows. They were all really good, and we were glad we took the time to watch them all.
The water skiing show was good. The host was a little goofy, but we enjoyed watching the stunts. | These flamingos were really pretty. Some of them appeared to be posing for photos!
SHAMU! We loved the Killer Whale show. The animals were amazing, and the soaking we got was refreshing in the heat of the day!
The evening show was funny. It kind of made fun of the other attractions and shows at Sea World. The Sea Lion was cute, and the walrus was just so huge! It was amazing that he could move like he did with all of that fat!
Day 2 of Sea World was for riding rides. Andrew, Andrea & Kelsey joined us, and we had a great time! We went to the water park first, then to the other rides. In the middle we saw a few of the exhibits.
This ride was called the Rio Loco, and it was a family favorite - one that we all enjoyed! Mollie especially liked this one and rode it several times! "Sea World o' Tehas" | The top picture was taken when Braden and Mom were sitting out. We decided to put money in a machine and shoot water at them when they passed us!
Up close with a shark! Look at those teeth! They really looked so cool. It was kind-of relaxing just standing there watching all of the fish. | We got to the dolphin exhibit too late - we didn't know it closed! Anyway, this was as close as we could get.
We were pretty disappointed in the penguin exhibit too. We got there around 6:00 only to find out that the penguins "go to sleep" at 4:00! And, apparently penguins need dark to sleep. Who knew?! | Here they are - most of them sound asleep! There were a few rebels who were still swimming around, but not many.
The Great White The Steel Eel Journey To Atlantis | Dad braved the Steel Eel and survived. Mollie got talked into riding Atlantis. She was NOT impressed!
Goodbye Sea World! Wish we had more time and cooler weather, but we had fun!
Tower of the Americas | Left is looking at the tower from Alamo Park. Above is standing beside it.
The sunset was amazing from 750 feet up!
This is one thing we will remember most about our week in San Antonio - the temperature! It was right at 100 degrees every day. 105 was the hottest we saw on the car thermometer.
Family picture in our T-shirts before we checked out of the hotel. Thanks for a fun week San Antonio!
