Yolanda was born to Frank and Juanita Saldívar, in San Antonio, Texas on September 19, 1960. She was the youngest of 8 children. As a child, Yolanda suffered from a lot of bullying at school because she was over weight. She didn't have or make many friends and kept herself socially isolated.

After working in the medical department for four years, Saldívar became very interested in Tejano music. She began to show up to many Tejano concerts. | Yolanda decided to approach Selena's father and asked him to start an official fan club for Selena. Her father agreed and Saldívar was immediately made the fan club's president.

By 1993 Selena's fan club had reached over 1,500 members in almost less than four years. The club eventually reached 5,000 members and became one of the largest fan clubs in San Antonio. The fan club was a success.

Earlier in 1995, the Quintanillas noticed, that Saldívar was illegally stealing money from the fan club and fired her. | Yolanda failed to meet with Selena about the money the first time. The second time, Saldívar claimed she had been raped in Mexico so she could not attend. Selena had proved that Yolanda was lying and had not been raped.

Selena and Yolanda returned to the Days Inn Hotel in Corpus-Christi where Selena demanded for the financial records. Yolanda then pulled her gun from her purse and pointed it at Selena. She tried to escape but Saldívar shot her once in the right shoulder.

Selena tried to make her way to the lobby for help, but collapsed on the floor as the clerk dialed 911. She died from loss of blood at 1:05 pm. This was 16 days before her 24th birthday

The defense attorney argued that the shooting was an accident, but the prosecution disagreed. As Saldívar being a trained nurse, she did not call 911 or try to help Selena after the injury. She was charged and convicted with 1st degree murder.

Yolanda is sentenced to life prison at The Mountain View Unit now known as the Christina Melton Crain Unit, in Gatesville, Texas. She is eligible for parole in 30 years which would be, March 30, 2025. She spends 23 hours alone everyday, in her 9x6 ft. prison cell.
