FC: Feral Cat Project
What Are Feral Cats? Feral cats are the wild offspring of domestic cats and are primarily the result of people failing to spay or neuter their cat or abandonment of their cats. Feral cats are different than strays which domesticated pet cats which have been raised among humans but became lost or were abandoned.
Feral cats often live in loose groups, or colonies, and usually go out of their way to avoid human contact
Many people are under the impression that feral cats are a menace to humans and will attack them. This is not the case as feral cats are frightened and skittish by nature.
Feral colonies of cats are eliminated by eradication programs if they are not adopted or taken in by humans and animal shelters. Killing the feral cats in an effort to reduce the population is not effective.
Trap and Release is a method involving the capture, neutering, and vaccination of feral cats and returning them back to their original territory or in another area if the original location is too dangerous. The cats are allowed to live out their lives as their nature demands, in the home the cats are familiar with.
TNR is the most humane and effective way of controlling the feral cat population.
