FC: Planting Ideas! By The Fourth Grade

The fourth grade decided to write a book about plants and all the things they have learned about them. Here is the result!

We began our plant study by reading The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. We discussed how the boy could have acted better toward the tree and who actually was the happier of the two. We also came to realize that some of the most important things in life were not material things like the boy wanted, but special things like love, caring, and compassion. We built a tree for our hallway and filled it with plant facts and websites we wanted to use in our research.

Another day we discussed and made a poster of what things depend on plants. That was a real eye-opener! | Mom

Then we got down to the real work of answering questions such as, "What can plants do?" They can provide homes for people and animals!

They provide food for other living things.

Plants provide us with pleasurable moments . . .!!

 and happy memories!

What DID we learn about plants? | Are all plants made the same? | Do all plants need the same thing? | Why are plants so important?

We know that there are nonvascular plants like these. | Nonvascular plants do not have tubes. They also do not have stems, roots, or leaves. Things like mosses, fungi, and mushrooms are nonvascular plants. They do not get very tall because they can't get their food very fast because it moves from cell to cell. They do not produce seeds or flowers. Josie - Hope - Kassandra - Missy - Jacob Kyle - Haley - Nathan

We know that there are vascular plants. Vascular plants have two networks of tubes. One of them works to carry water. The other network of tubs carries food from the leaves to the stems and roots. Vascular plants can live in water or on land. They grow really fast because they get their food really fast. Molly - Hayden - Emily - Trent Noah - Adam - Morgan - Megan

The stem supports the plant so it stands up. The stem also has tubes so food and water can be carried to the rest of the plant. | The roots absorb water and nutrients. They also keep the plant in place in the ground. | Leaves start photosynthesis and contain chlorophyll. | Flowers can reproduce their own kind. Flower seeds can travel by wind, human, or animal. | Lakyn - Kayla - Colton Brittany - Tyler - Blake - Chad

Photosynthesis is necessary not just so plants can make food for themselves. It produces oxygen so other living things can breathe. Photosynthesis happens in the leaves. To have photosynthesis happen, water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight have to be there. Alex - Derek Kaitlyn

Seeds Seeds are the first step of the life cycle. Seeds need water, soil, air, and sunlight to grow. Most seeds don't get what they need so they don't grow. A seed coat is the outer covering of the seed. There are two types of seeds--one is a monocot and the other is a dicot. A monocot seed is a seed that has only one cotyledon. A dicot has two. You can plant seeds for just about anything. Alexis - Logan - Denise Claire - Bryce - Ellie | Spores Spores are tiny cells. Ferns, mosses, and fungi have spores. Spores consist of single cells. Spores are released when plants are ripe. They contain food. If spores land where there is everything they need, they germinate. Autum - Camryn Kolton - Kelker | How do plants reproduce? | P.S. You can also reproduce plants by cuttings, bulbs, and roots!

So why do we need plants? We need plants to understand different living things. We need plants to enjoy the world around us. We need plants to feed and protect us. But mostly--WE NEED PLANTS TO SURVIVE! Everything on earth can be traced back to plants.. Without plants we don't have food, shelter, or even plastics and fossil fuels. That's why we need plants!

This project was a lot of fun! | I think this was a good thing to do for those kids who don't have computers. | I really liked learning about plants! | II didn't know that much about plants until I did this project. | Looking up things is really hard. | What the students said about "The Plant "Project" | It was cool! | Plants really ARE important. | I want to learn more about nonvascular plants. How do they do what they do?

Thank you for reading our book! If you have learned from this book, please share that information with others. Plant trees. Save our world! Jacob - Derek - Tyler - Kolten - Alex - Tori Megan - Alexis - Ellen - Denise - Chad - Chase Ashley - Kelker - Colton - Lakyn - Autum - Shyanne Haley - Hope - Trent - Kayla - Morgan - Nathan - Missy Kaitlyn - Molly - Josie - Kassandra Noah - Adam - Charles - Brittany - Hayden Blake - Emily - Cameryn - Kyle - Claire - Bryce - Brittany AND Mrs. Jackson - Mrs. Postlewait
