S: Remembering Blackberry by Jo Jackson

BC: Written in the memory of Gale's fury friends by Jo Jackson

FC: Remembering Blackberry

Snoozing! | This book is a collection of fond memories and stories about a cat named Blackberry that spent his entire life pleasing others.

"I'll give her about another 5 minutes. | Blackberry's favorite person was Gale.

A cat is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself." - Josh Billings

How did Blackberry get his name? Gale saw a Labrador Golden Retriever one day while she was conducting a Bible Study. She was so impressed by the dog, she told herself she would name her first pet Blackberry, if she ever got one. Where did Blackberry come from? Gale do not recall the details about where Blackberry came from. She knew he was a gift from me. I believe he was a homeless cat somewhere in Sonoma County.

Gale stated that she remember choosing Blackberry because he came directly to her at first sight. | Gale says she knew then that he would be an affectionate cat. Where did Blackberry live? As a kitten, Blackberry lived with Gale at 47 Edgewater Place, Larkspur, California.

Blackberry's family expanded when Gale adopted another cat name Snowball, Later, Blackberry, Snowball and Gale moved to Marin City where they lived with granny, Elizabeth Jackson. Blackberry quickly had to learn new coping skills. Basically how to dodge the end of a broom stick as he skirted pass grandma out of the kitchen area. Blackberry also learned other helpful skills. He learned who to beg for food and who not to beg. Whereas, he was notoriously known as beggar to others, he never begged grandma. PS: Snowball died 4 years ago.

 Here Kitty, Kitty

Blackberry enjoyed sitting on Gale's lap and getting his head scratched. He started doing this when he was a young kitten. Blackberry was very hyperactive as a kitten. When he had that blank stare on his face and rolled his eyes to the back of his head, you better get out of his way. You are about to get jumped. Gale called this Dancing Eyes. Blackberry had no problem letting people or other cats know that he was the boss and the King of his castle. He demanded attention from his servant, Gale Jackson and kept Snowball under his paw. Yes, he was ruler of his castle.

I loved Blackberry's beautiful black fur. However, every time I saw him I sneezed.

PS: He may have loved company....but don't ask him to give you his favorite seat in the house. | Grandma and Mike

People often say we looked like twins and they frequently had difficulty identifying the Jackson girls. But, ohhhh no, not Blackberry. He never confused us sisters. And when it came to Gale, he loved her unconditionally,

Gale Jackson | Blackberry had no fear of people. He welcomed all and everyone. His favorite pastime was getting his head scratched and teasing Snowball. He also had a shoe fetish. He loved to rub against your shoes and he would sometimes lay in them.

Blackberry was a sweet cat and he pretty much had the run of the couch. If you want to see a confused cat, try spreading out on the sofa to sleep. Remember when Dominique slept on the sofa one night? Now that was a real pill of a deal for Blackberry. Don't mess with the sofa unless you are Gale, of course.

Lucky cat | Blackberry knew who he can show affection to. He loved coming to Mel and rubbing his head at the bottom of Mel's feet. It was okay, because Mel liked it and looked forward to Blackberry's special touch.

Throughout my lifetime there was only one type of cat that I admired and respected in the animal kingdom. I experienced a rush when I saw the great Bingo cats and lions at the San Francisco zoo. A regular domestic household cat was at the lowest end of the totem pole. Frankly speaking I wanted nothing to do with them. However, unknowingly, Blackberry taught me a new respect for other types of cats. It began with him

greeting me with an affectionate rub between my legs each time I visited my sister. Then one day Blackberry leaped up right into my lap. To my surprise, I allowed this to go on for at least 5 minutes. From that day on, our friendship grew. Soon I was sharing my food with Blackberry at the kitchen table right under mama's nose. A secret that Blackberry never told anyone.

Sometimes I would sit on the couch on the side that was Blackberry's special place because it was the only seat left in the house. Blackberry would come and brush against my feet as if the say: JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE SITTING IN MY PLACE. And then he would just move on.

I enjoyed being a recipient of Blackberry's gentle welcome when Pauline and I visited Gale. He would always rub up against my feet.

 Our Furry Friends..

Mike says Blackberry was a trooper...just hanging in there. Mom says Blackberry kept schedules. He kept track of Gales comings and goings. While she was taking her shower in the mornings, he would wait for her to leave at the front door. Then he would go to his favorite spot and sleep most of the day until a certain time. He would then wait at the front door for her return home.
