FC: Pesticide Use
Pesticides are little things like herbicides, fungicides, insecticides that can control the bad things in your lawn, and make your lawn nice and green
How it works is: pesticides are small little things that kill all the bad things in your lawn or farmland. Some examples are: Insecticides, the most widely used of all pesticides, kill insects Herbicides destroy weeds or unwanted vegetation Fungicides protect seeds against fungi living in soils Bactericides control harmful bacteria Virucides suppress viruses Nematicides control nematodes (roundworms) Miticides kill mites and ticks Rodenticides control rodents
Some Long Term Affects: Air: It contributes to air pollution. When it's sprayed some of the pesticides get into the air and spread around and become a threat to wildlife, animals, and us humans too. This is something that can be a contributer to global warming too.
Water When it is sprayed sometimes it leaks through the soil and underneath the soil could be water. Pesticide drift can also occur, when it drifts off the applied spot and goes somewhere else. It could drift off into a This water that is affected is also the same water we humans, animals drink from. This over time will slowly will build up and the amount of people drinking pesticide water and getting sick from ti will increase.
Soil/Agriculture When pesticides are used in farms, the soil gets affected after because it makes the soil less organic and makes them lower quality soil, which makes our food have a lower quality, and makes it less organic. In the end pesticides have a chance of transferring into our food.
Humans and Animals: When its sprayed on lawns without any sign, to both humans and animals think its a safe lawn and have no problem playing on it. A little bird could come on it and eat the grass thinking its safe food, but end up dying from the chemical. A child could also do the same, and end up terribly sick. This also effects our water and our agriculture making it even worse for us humans. Some bad things that pesticides do are:Fatigue, Skin Irritations, Nausea, Vomiting, Breathing Problems,Brain Disorders, Blood Disorders, Liver & Kidney Damage, Reproductive Damage, Cancer, and Death.
Short term Affects on pesticide use: Right after being sprayed pesticides can cause harm to any humans, birds, that come in contact with it. The good effects are that it can destroy all the pests, directly or indirectly. It also can help the plants sprayed grow better, faster, and healthier.
How Safe is this Method? This method is not safe at all because of the amount of animals, agriculture and humans that are put in danger because of pesticide use. It damages our air, water, soil, and food, if something has a threat on the things we need in life, its not safe at all. Little kids and birds are put in danger just so we can have pest free lawns.
What is the Concern with Disposing? The concern is that people do not properly dispose of the unused pesticide. If you look at the next example, it shows that people don't properly dispose of them, thus resulting in death of children, and many animals. When pesticides are properly disposed, it is out of the way, in a way. Pesticides should not be used because we have no proper way to dispose of them.
Describe a Real Life Event Associated with this Issue A young boy was searching for clothing and other items at an outdoor collection bin used by a local charity. While looking through a bag of odds and ends, he found some small white tablets that looked like candy. He put them in his pocket and later, at home, he took out the tablets and began to chew on them. They weren't very good so he didn't eat much but, within hours, his parents found him slumped over and unconscious. They rushed him to the hospital where he fell into a coma and died the next day. Doctors identified the mysterious tablets: they were tablets of the pesticide Lindane.
