FC: Corruption in Colombia
FARC is a guerilla group in Colombia that are fighting against the paramilitary corportions such as the AUC | The AUC is a paramilitary corporation that are the "big dogs" of all paramilitary corportions. The organization began to protect local economic, social, and political interest by fighting insurgents like the FARC.
The FARC and AUC are fighting in what is known as the Colombian Civil War. It is fueled by the spread of illegal drug trade, drug cartels, and the US-backed War on Drugs.
Hugo Chavez is the current President of Venezuela, however, he supports FARC. This is basically saying he supports terrorism and the illegal drug trade in Colombia.
Normal citizens (and children) are employed to hand pick the Coca plant for FARC. They are responsible for the farming, production and exportation of cocaine.
The produced Cocaine is then shipped by cargo ships. However they are sometimes searched and drugs are inevitably found. March 19, 2007 marked the biggest drug bust in history. A Panamanian ship was searched and 21 tons of cocaine were found.
It is common for the FARC to take people hostage, such as Mr. Pinchao (above). He was taken hostage for 9 years and escaped to the Amazon, where he survived for 18 days before being found.
FARC are also heavily involved in arms trafficking. They trade cocaine and other illegal drugs in return for arms from the black market dealers and criminal gangs.
On February 4th, 2008, rallies were held in Columbia criticizing FARC and demanding liberation of hundreds of hostages. | Gustavo Petro, a Columbian politician, was among the many who marched in opposition to the FARC. Mr. Petro is a member of the Alternative Democratic Pole.
