S: 4th Quarter
FC: 4th Quarter | By: Zach Sturdevant
It was a overcast, 72 degree night in Lawndale. Perfect night for a football game. It was the fourth quarter of the Lincoln/ Lawndale game and everybody was there. This was the state championship and Lawndale hadn't been there in over 20 years.
The Lincoln Hawks were ranked 12th in the area. Lawndale wasn't even close to being ranked. The Lobos were a huge underdog in this match up. This was supposed to be the easiest state championship for the hawks, but they would be shown differently later in the game.
Its the 4th quarter. The score, Lincoln-46 Lawndale-44. This is the closest any non-ranked team has been to Lincoln. There was eight minutes still remaining in the 4th. Lawndale had the ball, trying to run the clock down just enough so they could score in the last few minutes. Lawndale ran the ball run after run after run. Lincoln finally stopped Lawndale on second down making it 3rd and 9, giving the lobos no choice but to go to the passing game.
Third and long, Lawndale in gun formation with a running back to the right of the quarterback. Two receivers to the left and a tight end on the right with another receiver out on the numbers. Lawndale sends the tight end in motion to the left. Just as he passes the center the ball is sent back to the quarterback. He rolls out left. the middle receiver ran a short corner and looks wide open. the ball is thrown and intercepted by the safety! There was no chance for Lawndale. Best chance they had was to get the ball back and attempt a field goal and win by one.
Lawndale had a pretty good kicker. His name was Adam Swift He was selected for the all American team last season and won the Adam Vinatieri kicker award the season before that. But recently he had lost his brother in a car accident. A drunk driver ran a red light and ran right through him. Adam had been on and off since that had happened. There was no telling how he would do under that kind of pressure.
Lincoln still had the ball with 15 seconds left in the game. they were gonna do one more run play and it would be the end of the game. Lincoln snaps the ball and the running back goes straight up the middle. suddenly there is a rush and the ball is out! Lincoln fumbled the ball and Lawndale recovered with 10 seconds left!
The ball would be spotted on Lincolns 38 yard line. a field goal would be 50 yards long but with a wind blowing behind them. Adam's longest kick was 42 yards. No one had the confidence to bring out the field goal team but a hail mary to the end zone was to risky. Lawndales field goal team heads out on the field.
Adam lines up for the kick just as they are about ready to kick it Lincoln calls a timeout. Lincoln wanted to throw Lawndale off. Building more pressure on Adam to make the kick. Both teams were out of time outs now. Nothing left to do but kick it.
Again Lawndale lines up for the field goal. The ball is snapped and Adam runs up and kicks it. the ball is flying through the air end over end. it seems like its taking forever. The ball looks like its gonna drop short but then a gust of wind blows and it goes through the uprights! Lawndale wins a huge upset and wins the state title!
