Chacho stood at the edge of the lake. He looked across the water for his best friend, Mr. Hernandez. Chacho was wondering if Mr. Hernandez was coming today. He looked up the hill again to see if Mr. Hernandez was coming down the path to the lake. He called for Mr. Hernandez to come, "Honk, honk, honk."

Chacho remembered when he was a baby in the petshop. He was sitting in a box with some ducks. Mr. Hernandez bought him for a pet. He thought that Chacho was a duck. As the days grew shorter, Chacho grew bigger. Mr. Hernandez saw that he was not a duck. He grew so big and did not look like a duck or quack like a duck. He was a big white goose!

Chacho recalled how Mr. Hernandez and he became the best of friends. They played together. Mr. Hernandez fed him and took care of him like a son. Sometimes they even watched TV together!

Chacho also thought about when he was in Mr. Hernandez' back yard. The neighbors complained of his loud honking. Mr. Hernandez had to find Chacho a new home. One day when Mr. Hernandez went to a guitar lesson, he found Hollenbeck Park where there was a lake and lots of ducks and other geese.

Chacho stood on one leg and wondered where Mr.Hernandez was. He put his head under his wing and slept. When he woke up, he lifted up his head and honked loudly for Mr. Hernandez.

Chacho thought about the day Mr. Hernandez put Chacho in his car. Chacho liked to ride in the car. He wondered why Mr. Hernandez was so sad. He took them to Hollenbeck Park.

Chacho and Mr. Hernandez played at the park. Then Chacho followed Mr. Hernandez to the car to go home with him. They both ran to the car. But that made Mr. Hernandez unhappy.

Chacho thought about when Mr. Hernandez took him back to the lake wall and put Chacho in the water behind the wall. Mr. Hernandez ran back to the car crying because he would miss Chacho. Chacho tried to jump up over the wall to follow Mr. Hernandez to the car, but he was too slow. Mr. Hernandez left Chacho alone at the park.

Chacho kept waiting by the edge of the lake. He looked and looked for Mr. Hernandez. Chacho got super impatient. He lifted his head as high as he could and gave a loud and long HONK!!! "Mr. Hernandez, where are you?"

Chacho saw someone walking down the path. He realized that it was Mr. Hernandez. He swam as fast as he could and leaped into Mr. Hernandez' arms near the shore of the lake.

Mr. Hernandez brought bread, cereal and tortillas to feed Chacho and his friends. The ducks and other geese got jealous and would go "Honk, Quack, Honk, Quack." So now Mr. Hernandez feeds Chacho's friends too.

Chacho guards Mr. Hernandez when he takes a nap. He does not like it when people come too close to Mr. Hernandez. It makes him nervous, so he runs after them and bites their shoes and legs.

When Chacho wants Mr. Hernandez to play with him in the water, Chacho taps him to wake him up. (Mr. Hernandez calls them kisses.) Mr. Hernandez throws sticks into the lake for Chacho to fetch. Sometimes Mr. Hernandez throws him in the lake and Chacho swims back to Mr. Hernandez to be tossed in again.

Chacho has many new friends at the lake. He swims and plays with his friends and sits in the sun on the cool green grass. But sometimes he still misses Mr. Hernandez.

Chacho knows that Mr. Hernandez will return each week to play with him and feed him. He will always protect Mr. Hernandez so he can take naps in the park. Mr. Hernandez will always be his very best friend.
