FC: "Fight or Flight Your Basic Instinct" By Damian Sanchez

It was Tuesday March, 4, 2008 when my life changed forever. My family and I had just recently moved to a small town called Sonoma, where supposedly nothing ever takes place. We moved from the busy city of San Francisco because my parents were tired of all the noise and traffic that came with living in a big city. It all started on the day I was to start school. It seemed like any regular day.

I woke up, got dressed, and dragged my feet down the stairs. I fixed my cereal when I noticed the milk carton on the floor and milk everywhere. At first I thought that my sister had made the mess, but then why was it still there? She knows my mom would be angry. I called out for my sister Shanice, but there was no answer.I called out for my mom and dad, but there was still no answer.

Where was everyone, I thought to myself. Something did not seem right. I decided to go upstairs to see where everyone was. As I started up the stairs I heard muffled sounds and suddenly felt sick inside. My sister's room at the top of the stairs was open and as I peered inside; she wasn't there. I thought I heard my mom scream. OH my God, was that my mom, I thought. I slowly crept towards my parent's room.

My heart was racing, as if it were going to burst out of my chest. As I approached the door I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. My whole body was numb and tingling all at the same time. Should I open the door? I thought, or run and get help. Before I knew it, I was in the room running towards a man dressed in black who was tying up my family.

As we fought, he slammed me against the window and I could feel myself falling. Thank God I landed on him. I felt disoriented for a few minutes, then I felt him move. I pulled myself up and charged to our shed and grabbed a shovel and some rope. When I returned to were the man in black was, he was trying to crawl off the lawn. Without thinking, I hit him with the shovel and then tied him up.

Was I really okay? I thought, did this just really happen? Then I realized my family was still upstairs . I dashed up the stairs and threw myself on them, hugging them with relief. After I untied them, we could all hear the sirens wailing down our street. My father led the way down the stairs, and outside of the house was the man in black, still unconscious on the lawn. The neighbors must have heard the commotion and called the police.

As the policeman logged in my parents and my report, I couldn't help but still be in disbelief of what had happened. Did I really just tackle a man and fall out a window? The policeman told me that I was very brave and if it weren't for me, my parents and sister could have been really hurt. As fast as it had taken place, it was over and the police and neighbors vanished.

My family and I sat on the porch and just held each other for a long time. We still couldn't believe that a horrible thing like this would ever take place, especially in a small town. I guess it shows you that you never know what is going to take place, no matter where you live, or what you are capable of doing until you are in that moment. Do you fight or flight?
