FC: Forever Friends | Our Guardian Angel | Ellie, Beth, Joyce, Polly

All Roads Taken A road fills my friend Ellie with glee All she needs is a friend, usually me. And we might end up in Tennessee It is amazing what she might see. So off she goes on her next spree. A new place to eat hidden in the hills Winding around back roads is a thrill. Knowing her is magic to me. She is Forever Ellie. .

Ellie knows everyone, well almost, she may have missed one or two. I wouldn't take any bets on it If I were you. She is tall and lovely too. Me, I am not quite five two. We met in college in 1955, and will be friends all our lives. We were many years apart, but had each in our hearts.

Ellie met the man of her dreams. A Knight too good to be true. I lost my friend, or so it seems. I was so lost and sad too. But Ellie included me and we became three, Bob ,Ellie and me. So they were married beginning their Life's Journey. And he didn't even have a horse.

Bob and Ellie and the Navy Ellie was teaching in a small country school while Bob was in service. She hated being cooped up all day and the kids made her nervous. She met Joyce and Beth, teachers who taught nearby. They visited me to get away, and that is no lie.

Beth She taught first grade or as she called it "see Jane run, See Dick run." That didn't seem like much fun. A soft spoken little blond with an open mind. We all loved her, She was just our kind.

Joyce A true Southern Belle.with a soft drawl . She could charm the pants off all. Ellie added her to the bunch. Now, we had four for lunch. Ellie talked fast, Joyce slow. Beth and I talk.?Well. No.

Joyce met Thomas and those Southern Belles fall fast. Here was her Rhett at last. To him, she was a rose, So now we had two couples madly in love. Beth and I wanted to give them a shove.

There is an old saying about Creeks rising. Well, they do, Lord willing or not. It was Saturday, windy and hot Beth and I had a date that night, I felt nervous, all was not right. "You are afraid to go tonight". Beth said. I could only nod my head, unable to shake the sense of dread.

I wanted to go home , but we parked on a hill. Rain began to fall so hard, I couldn't be still. So the rest agreed to go, but there was a creek down below. The water was rising fast. We had no way to get past. Water was now in the car. We had come too far.

We knew to get out before the car floated away. Wading in the rushing water , we saw a house, a mystery to this day. I knew all about that house, I felt I had been there before. I didn't want to go in that door Yet, how could I know? About this and more? I knew it when she opened the door.

Finally rescued by an army duck. Two little dripping girls, caught up in a nightmare so surreal, that we actually could not feel. It was as if we were stone. When we looked back , the house was gone. It has been our secret to this day. No one would believe us anyway. I was so glad that I had Beth that day.

Graduation It just had to happen to me. I received my BS from Dr. Scully. My father called to say I had a job. So my career began at Wardell High. And no one ever told me why. On the first day, I had to walk a young black girl into a frightening all white world.

So it began, a tiny little woman in a yellow dress flanked by the State Patrol, wondering why I always did what I was told. Years later I learned that men in white sheets had burned a cross at the farm. These men were neighbors. one was president of the school board, surely they meant no harm. My father was a respected man and they were shamed. Each one came to take the blame and I was given a job to make amends. My father, who understood man's weaknesses, accepted so they could all remain friends. Now you know why, I never, ever cry.

Ellie and Joyce became domestic Queens. Beth and I were still stuck in teaching with no means. The pay was so bad we had to live at home. We were so bored , we wanted so much to be able to roam. In summer we were flat broke. We could not even buy a smoke.

Beth found love when her brakes failed, she almost rear ended a car. She steered out of the way, and nailed the man she had dreamed of from afar. When she told me this story, I knew it was so. That was the way our lives seemed to go. With all three of my friends gone, I decided to go off on my own.

I felt that I had taught everywhere, and that Johnny Cash song was in my head. There was a bomb scare in one school and I thought I would end up dead. I had an interview at the Chase . The man I met took me out of the race All happened by chance. It was my life, my dance.

In 1984, we moved to San Jose. The song must have been on my mind. We both were the wandering kind. We had traveled to many places , enjoyed almost every day. But it was time to come home to stay. So back to the Midwest to a small town It was really the time to settle down.

We had not seen each other since '63. My sister saw Beth at the cemetery. She asked her if she knew me. All the others were a phone call away. It was left to Ellie to arrange the day. It was as if we had never been away. Our friendship had survived over 50 Years. It was all laughter and and no tears.

Ellie and Beth had lost their husbands. It really hurt. Joyce and I still had ours, but they were old as dirt. We were all survivors in a world that often found us weeping. We lived our lives with little time for sleeping. Four women who were Forever Friends. Hopeful that this was not the end.

I did not delve into our lives. I know Ellie has made the world a better place. Without her , there would be no Shelter for Abused Women in Southeast Missouri. She deserves all the accolades. She was the best friend I ever made. | on the road again

Joyce, the fragile Southern Belle has been a rock in many lives. She has stayed close friends to Ellie all those years, Beth and I were making the best out of difficult times. Beth reared two fine young men.. As for me. I wrote this epic rhyme. If you think there is more to see. You will not see it from me. Dedicated to the four of us. Ellie,Polly,Beth ,Joyce.
