 Chapter 2
Hi, I'm Sonny Hickam. My family just moved into the Captain's house. The Captain had retired and Dad took his position. | New Home
I love the new house! It's really big and I don't have to share a room with Jim, my older brother. From my window I can see the tipple where the miners go to work.
Jim and I have never gotten along. We always fight; whether it's with fists or words. One of the reasons we do is because Jim thinks I'm the cause of our parents' fights. | Sonny Jim
One time when we were fighting, it went too far. Jim managed to crack my ribs, which hurt really bad. I broke a chair and dented a pan. Also, during that fight, we both fell through the screen door.
When I was born my dad was upset and complained because I was a boy and he had wanted a girl. | Elsie | Homer Senior
My mom named me Homer Junior to spite Homer Senior, but my nickname immediately came to be Sonny.
I went to the Coalwood school from elementary to 9th grade. I'm now in tenth grade and this is my first year going to Big Creek High School. | School
My bus to Big Creek High School takes a long time and is very crowded. Having Jack Martin as our driver doesn't help either because he is so strict.
Dorothy Plunk | Today was the greatest! In science, I got partnered with Dorothy for the worm dissection. She is the most beautiful girl.
I want to ask her out, but I am shy around her. Whenever I think about her my heart beats faster.
There was beeping on the radio. I heard the DJ say that Sputnik was in space. | Early this morning mom woke me up and told me to go downstairs. I got up fast and went down. | Saturday | October 5, 1957
A bunch of people got together in my backyard to watch Sputnik fly over. | Late at night I got to see Sputnik in the sky. It was a beauty. | "I let my imagination wander, seeing the first explorers on the moon as they worked their way back to their station after a day of walking among craters and plains. ...The men crossed the tracks and I saw the glint of their lunch buckets in the tipple light, and I came slowly back to reality. ... I wasn't on von Braun's team. I was a boy in Coalwood, West Virginia. All of the sudden, that wasn't good enough." | Sputnik
I got my friends, Roy Lee, Sherman, and O'Dell together and we made a rocket out of a plastic flashlight and cherry bombs.
We set the rocket off on top of my mom's prized rose garden fence. It went kaboom!
