By: Daniel Shen, Peter Pufan & Husain Tapia

A long, long, time ago, in a distant land called Particles there lived a strange tribe of electrons. Although everything between them was peaceful, the electrons always seemed to be sad and unhappy. That's why they were all negative. There was no balance in the force.

One day, visitors with the funny name of protons discovered the land of Particles. They loved the land thought this was in fact paradise and they decided to settle there with the electrons. Since the protons were always happy and optimistic, they were always positive. They mingled with the electrons and they found the balance in the force.

Everything was great and life was good. However, one day, a foreign clan called the neutrons saw this distant and mysterious land from outer space. They also decided that it was great place to call home and they too decided to live here. They liked the protons and electrons and settling was easy.

However, now with the neutrons coming in, the small town called Particles was getting too crowded. | Since all of them lived in harmony, the leaders decided that these neutrons, electrons and protons in this town would be mixed together and then divided into independent villages. Each village would have its own council, rules and taxes.

At this meeting, the 3 tribes also decided that each of these villages would be called an "atom". It was decided that atoms with the same amount of protons, neutrons and electrons would be given a special name of “elements” that would be unique to only those types of atoms and signify balance.

In every village, the electrons, protons and neutrons would all have a special designated area. | The protons and neutrons would live in the center of the village; called the "nucleus", while the electrons would live on the outskirts of the villager, acting as guards, circling the village in orbits.

The electrons in every village were always assigned in a particular formation, in which they were separated into groups called "shells" that orbited the nucleus at different levels. The first shell had 2 electrons, and the next 2 shells each had a maximum of 8 electrons. | There was a rule that if there weren’t enough electrons for a full shell (also called the valence shell), there could be no next level of electron formation. This strict living arrangement of electrons was referred to as the Bohr Diagram.

The Chiefs made it known that it was preferable to have the same amount of protons and electrons in each village. | Overall it was found that the atom worked best when all the electrons were in shells, orbiting the village center (nucleus). Therefore all the atoms loved an ion charge of zero.

However, some of the atoms didn’t have full shells. Therefore, the sodium atoms, which had 1 extra electron on its outermost shell and the chlorine atoms that needed 1 electron since it is 1 electron short of getting a full shell, would usually form alliances to make their shells complete. This colony of different atoms is also called a compound or a salt.

Sometimes these villages known as atoms had travelers who would stop over and live there for some time. These travelers were always neutrons and as they hung out, the atom would change into an isotope of that atom.

I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone's golf game. It is called an eraser. ~ Arnold Palmer

The protons, neutrons and the electrons lived happily ever after together in the land of the particles. This, my friends, is the Atomic Chronicles.
