FC: A Rough Upbringing | A modern tale of The Ugly Duckling | By: Chelly Spahalski
One upon a time there was a young boy named Michael. He was the youngest of three children. He grew up with two older sisters so he never really fit in. Thankfully, his mother was always there to support him.
Michael was made fun of by all of his classmates because he had rather large ears and a lisp, so he talked funny. Because he was different, the kids would all laugh at him. There was one boy in particular. His name was Kevin and he would call Michael names like "Big Ears" and mock the way he spoke.
He was also diagnosed with a condition called ADHD, which made him fidgety, jumpy, and could never focus in school.
This got him in trouble a lot with his teachers.
To deal with some of this excess energy, Michael's sister suggested that he try a sport like swimming. From then on, he was hooked. He swam whenever he got the chance.
Michael had found something that made him feel good, like he finally fit in.
Michael practiced for years and when he was 15 he qualified to go to the Olympics, becoming the youngest male to make the Olympic swim team in 68 years. He didn't win anything but he kept practicing.
Four years later he returned to the Olympics and this time he won 6 gold and 2 bronze medals. At the next Olympic games, Michael broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympic game with 8 medals.
He stood up there on the podium as the ruler of the United States handed him his medal and he felt like royalty.
Michael Phelps then proved to Kevin and everyone who bullied him, just how wrong they were about him. And he lived happily ever after.
