My name is Scout Finch and I have a very interesting family. Us Finches have lived here in Maycomb for as long as I can remember. We were here when the city was first started and we’ve been here since. I got me a brother named Jem Finch and a daddy named Atticus Finch. My mommy passed away a long time ago and I don’t remember much of her. also, we got us a cook named Calpurnia. She’s black, but real nice. We really like her and she takes good care of us when were hungry and when were bored.
Enough about my family, I want to tell you more about me and my personal life. Let’s start with school, I am in the 4th grade and I hate school. Ever since it’s began, schools been way too slow for me. When I first started school in first grade, the teacher wouldn’t let me read. She said that first graders shouldn’t be able to read yet. Can you believe that? She wouldn’t let me demonstrate what I knew! She even told me not to read anymore! Daddy told me that she just had her own way of teaching and I needed to respect that. The weird thing is that daddy and me still read at night. He knows she doesn’t want me to read at home and he still reads with me. I really don’t get why. He’s telling me to do one thing, while he’s doing the other. I will never fully understand Atticus.
I have a lot of very important people in my life. For starters, Atticus, my dad. He gives me some of the most useful advice that I’ve ever heard. For example, he once said “don’t judge a person until you see life while standing in their shoes.” I think this is the best advice I have ever gotten. Last year when I was having trouble understanding my first grade teacher’s lessons, Atticus gave me this advice. I didn’t understand why my teacher wasn’t letting me read and Atticus helped clear it up. I realized that it was just her style of teaching since she was from up North. Another reason I like Atticus is because of his amazing character. He is always so humble and kind. Just the other week he took on a case defending some Negro. Now everybody calls him a “Negro-lover.” I used to get really mad when people called him this, but he told me to straighten up and I did. I no longer beat people up when they call him this. He is humble because he doesn’t explain all his reasoning for taking on the case with the Negro. He just accepted the case because he felt like it was the right thing to do. He doesn’t feel the need to explain himself to anyone who questions why he did it or calls him a “negro-lover”
The second most important person in my life is Calpurnia. She’s our cook and she makes us really good food .She’s really nice and cool. She is one of the nicest black person I have ever met. She once brought us to her church. There were a lot of black people there and I had the feeling that they didn’t want us to be there. She stood her ground and they backed off. They didn’t have and hem books and they just repeated what one guy said. We asked her who it was and she said it was her son. We also asked her why they didn’t have any hem books and she said it was because only a few of them could read. Calpurnia depends on us and I think we depend on her. She needs us for a job and I think we would be lost if we didn’t have her to cook for us. Not only that but she is overall like our mother. We don’t have a mother because she passed away when we were young. I haven’t heard much about her because I don’t think Atticus cared for her too much. I don’t think Aunt Alexandria cares for Calpurnia too much. I think it’s because she’s black. Aunt Alexandria doesn’t care for black people too much, she’s really racist. She’s one of the people who you would expect to call Atticus a “Negro lover.” I don’t like her much either.
I got something mighty fine to tell you ‘bout. The other day when Jem and I were walking home from school and something shiny caught our eye in a tree. It was up a little bit in the tree but Jem could reach it. He pulled it out and guess what it was? Bubble gum! This was a rare thing in Maycomb, we hardly ever got bubble gum. There were two pieces, one for me and one for Jem. That bubble gum was so good I chewed it for hours. I had to spit it out at dinner though because Calpurnia told me to. That made my day so much better. We often checked the knot hole where we found it for more bubble gum, but there was never any more.
I gotta another cool thing to tell y’all about. We found this one in the knot hole too. We first discovered the knot hole when we found the piece of gum on our way home from school. We checked it every day coming home from school and found some really cool stuff. But one that we found was cooler than the rest. One day we found soap carvings. They weren’t just normal soap carvings though, they were carvings of us. We though the knot hole was someone’s hiding place, but now we think that someone had been putting the things there for us. The carving kinda creeped us out because we didn’t know who could have done them. We didn’t know anyone that carved and they were almost exact replicas of us. We never found anything else in the knot hole after this because someone covered it up with cement.
“Until I fear I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.”
