S: 2012 Summer Vacation at Taiwan
BC: of 2012 | The weather was hot. Not surprised, the family more or less had small arguments or conflicts. However, there were many special memories during this trip. This was one of the trips that we were able to visit many places. We did not encounter any typhoon when we were there. The Kenting trip was also the first time that my whole family had a vacation together. I did not recall that my parents ever took four of us out together when we were young. After I left Taiwan to study in US since 1993, it was even harder to get together. It was fun and very special to me because who knows whether we will have such a chance in the future again. I was happy to see that my mom learned to relax more and my father also became better in many ways. My younger sister's financial situation is a lot better now. Even my brother seems more mature. My older sister learned to exercise more. Overall, we had a chance to go out with each of my family individually and as a group. This was indeed a very special trip. Not a relaxing type of vacation but a very special family vacation. And to me, it is what matters the most.
FC: 2012 Summer Vacation At Taiwan | 6/19/2012 to 7/17/2012
"Families are like fudge mostly sweet with a few nuts." ~Author Unknown | Visited wine factory near Chiayi
Jan had a business trip to China and left the house 2 days before our flight to Taiwan. I was under a lot of pressure to get 2 audit reports done prior to the trip. Getting the house ready and packing for the trip were also a challenge. I was a little bit nervous about taking the kids by myself for an international trip. I thought through all kinds of things that we would need during the trip. I packed snacks and Jan loaded bunch of cartoons in iPad. I also prepared motion sickness wrist bands and pills to prevent kids from motion sickness. When we arrived Taiwan, there was a typhoon and we were not sure which city (Kaohsiung, Taoyuan, or returning back to Japan) we would be landing. Fortunately, the typhoon barely moved toward north prior to us landing in Kaohsiung. It would be a problem if we landed in Taoyuan when my sister planned to pick us up in Kaohsiung. Other than that, the trip actually turned out great. Boys actually behaved pretty good. They both had a good nap during the flight and were very helpful in carrying their own backpacks. I was very thankful for that. They grew up a lot since our last international trip. | Travel with Kids
DAD: The Man, The Myth & The Legend
Lugang We were originally going to Taichung. We changed our destination and went to Lugang because Alex had motion sickness. Lugang was one of the most popular old towns.
Jan was still in China. We visited Lugang. Kids had fun checking out many stone lions, god statues and temples.
Love/Valentines Day/Anniversary | "Lucky I'm in love with my best friend"
"I love you, not only for what you are, But for what I am when I am with you." -Roy Croft | The best thing about me is you.
It is SUMMER time! | Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Dinosaur!
 Taichung National Science Museum
Studied at Shan-Shin Elementary for 4 days
Kindergarten kids have a place to take a nap at the school. | Lunch was served in the classroom. | Play Time
Gukeng is a small town that has a tourist street that sells various local traditional food. The weather was hot but we had fun visiting the place. | Gukeng
 Kenting Beach | Best Friends!
 The Best Summer!
Best Friends! | We tried 5 different types of water activities. We had such a splash fun!
This area was under the water during tide rise. Therefore, it has a lot of live fishes, crabs, sea stars and many other sea creatures that kids can catch. In between the rocky coral gaps, it is sandy flat ground. Therefore, it was quite easy to walk there with bare feet. Kids just love it.
Getting Back To Nature | We ate at one of the local sea food restaurants. | The price was very good and the food was delicious. We spent about NT$2500 Total for 13 people.
Night Market | Kids loved to visit night markets in Taiwan | The market is like a night State Fair. You can see people walking around at the market past mid-night.
It's the little things that make life beautiful.
The weather was hot. We decided to visit a popular farm on the top of the mountain. The mountain was pretty and comfortable for hiking. We watched a sheep show and horse show. We left the farm around 1 pm and headed toward Hualien.
"Good times are even better when they are shared"
"The more you laugh the longer you live"
Chris suddenly became a "photographer" that he would arrange us to a certain pose for photo taking. It was funny to see how he tried to be the boss.
The weather was really hot. We visited this sea shore. It was very pretty but it was dangerous to play water because the rocky beach was very narrow and would suddenly became very deep.
Taroko Gorge | Fun and scenic drive!
Right outside the Taroko Gorge, we went to a creek that had very clear, clean and cool water. During the hot weather like this, nothing was better than playing in the cold river.
Look at these breathtaking sea shores!
We originally planned to stay in Yilan and then go to Xitou. We had to change the plan because we had a car accident. We ended up driving back home. We arrived home past midnight. We were very tired that I did not really want to visit Xitou right the way next day. However, my older sister had a day off and she did not want to waste her vacation day. Therefore, we visited Xitou. We arrived there around noon. At the beginning, kids were complaining about walking. They were never really interested in walking in the forest. However, it was better soon after that. At the end, we all had a wonderful day trip in the forest. The best part of the day must be the restaurant that we visited that night. It was an all you can eat Japanese - Korean BBQ and hot pot meal. We loved the variety choices of the food. So fresh and delicious!
Shrimp Fishing | A bunch of us went shrimp fishing. Those shrimps were big. Jan, Alex and Chris each has caught at least one shrimp. Fun experience for them.
It was a day that we went out with my parents without my sisters. We managed to find the Budai harbor. We also found a beach that we never noticed before. The sand was very fine and comfortable to walk. We enjoyed a good swim. At the end of the day, we also had our dinner at the tourist fish market. The sea food was very cheap. It was too bad and Alex is allergic to sea food. We also purchased 4 hermit crabs for kids. It took them a while to select their own hermit crab. It was fun to look at those little creatures.
Big Meal | We had a big meal together two nights before we left. It was a very pricey restaurant and we accidentally ordered way too many dishes. For the price (about NT$8000), it was not worth the price.
