FC: Africa 7 countries in 7 weeks

Melbourne to South Africa Kenya Uganda Rwanda Botswana Zimbabwe Zambia | South Africa | ARRIVED 25 DEC 2013 | Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa and is not only the most popular international tourist destination in South Africa, but Africa as a whole. | 2: Cape Town from Table Mountain National Park

3: It's hard to believe I am here standing on the side of Lion's Head watching the sun rise on the last day in 2013. At 670m this is a small mountain, but one of the most climbed peaks in the world. 4: The view from the summit at 6:40am over Cape Town is amazing. 5: Protea's in flower at Kirstenbosh 6: Blue Mountain in the middle of Long Street was one of many colorful heritage homes converted into accommodation and our initial home! | 3

 4 | 5 | 6

2 days on the double decker tourist bus, sunrise climb of Lion Head, a full day exploring Table Mountain, a day bike riding along the Cape of Good Hope, local museums, Bird and Monkey Park, Botanic gardens, beaches and lots more.. | 7: Despite its flat summit, Table Mountain does have a high point. not exactly a lofty spire but a humble outcrop known as Mackear's Beacon some 1088m above sea level | 8: wild Leopard Turtle Kirstenbosh | 9: (below) Kirstenbosh National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. | 10: | Hiking Table Mountain

Tourist bus route around Cape Town | 12: Enjoying the sun rise from the top of Lion's Head | 11: (right) Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the smallest yet richest in the world. It has over 9,000 species of which 67% are endemic.

13: Camps Bay Beach home to the highest concentration of multimillionaires in Cape Town and some of the best beaches around Cape Town. Unfortunately it is also part of the Atlantic Seaboard with water temperatures averaging around 10 degrees C. I attempted a swim but despite the warm weather just couldn't get past the knees!

Cape Town to Knysna to Graaff-Reinet | 14: locals at the township, half drunk at 11:00am discuss the upcoming ritual circumcision required for teenage boys to enter manhood - no painkillers allowed!!! 15: view of Knysna bay from the heads. 16: Carlee poses with some of the township children 17: some of the temporary housing in the township. 18: much of the country side between Kynsna and Graaff Reinet is flat open grazing land for sheep and goats. The sheep's meat is flavoured by the fragrant shrubs and grasses that grow on the Karoo plains. | 14

 Cape Town to Knysna | Knysna to Graff-Reinet | 15 | 16 | 17 | 18

Valley of Desolation | a geological wonder of weathered dolerite pillars which is a declared national monument with magnificent views over the Karoo plains. | 19 | 20

19: vertical cliffs and columns of dolerite teeter precariously 120 metres above the valley floor 20: sunrise overlooking the Valley of Desolation. 21: a large tortoise grazes beside the road. 22: Vachellia erioloba - African thorn tree | 21 | 22

23: Gabriel, a 5 month old male that is spoilt rotten and struts around like he owns the place. 24: I got a chance to pat Eden who is 10 months and loves the attention. She was purring like a motorboat! | 23 | 24 | is a big cat center that was founded in 2006 with the long-term goal of breeding cheetahs and releasing them back into the wild.

25 | 26 | 27 | . | 25: Carlee spent 3 weeks working at Cheetah Experience helping look after the animals. Part of the time was also spent interacting with them. Dew in the picture was a very moody 15 month old girl and contact was very much on her terms. 26-27: Carlee's favorite was Faith. A 10 month old girl who had meningitis when a cub and suffered physical disabilities as a consequence. Carlee would often sleep the night with Faith in her enclosure and worked hard to help rehabilitate her.

 28

Panthera leo Leo | Lions are social animals, unlike most other members of the cat family, living in a pride (family group) with between 20 and 30 members. Some prides have just one male, others up to four. Lions are strongly territorial and will fight off any strange male who tries to enter their territory. Fights can be vicious, often not ending until one lion is dead. The winner takes over dominance of the territory, and the pride. Old or injured lions who have lost their territory often die trying to fend for themselves. A male in charge of a pride, often develops a full dark mane as is the case of this male photographed at the Wild Cat farm in Bloemfontein just on sun set. | Next Page: 29: White Rhino at Bloemfontein Zoo. He just loved coming over to get his back scratched. 30: Black-backed Jackal at the Wild Cat Farm Bloemfontein. 31: The endemic Black-footed Cat which is the second smallest cat species in the world- Wild Cat Farm. 32: One of 2 female Servals at Cheetah Experience and roughly around 1 year of age. Both are very affectionate but rarely purr. 33: Cape or Large Spotted Genet, is related to civets and is a nocturnal and arboreal opportunistic hunter - Wild Cat Farm 34: Cheetah Experience houses several leopards, this one is called Zorro and is about 1 year old and nearly full grown. By all accounts he is a giant teddy bear, bone lazy and rarely plays unless food is involved.

 29 | 30 | 31 | 33

 31 | 32 | 34

 35 | 36

A highlight of my trip to Africa was the game drive in the Mara. This is a vast grassland reserve that joins onto the Serengeti reserve in the south. | 37 | 38 | Maasai Mara | 35: Mum investigates a safari car while her young shelters behind a dirt mound. 36: To get to the Mara you need first to cross the Great African Rift Valley. 37: Male Waterbuck 38: Secretarybird

39: Imagine our surprise as we drove up to a small group of female lions only to find that it was a cub day care center. The rest of the pride must have been off hunting while these few females were entrusted to the task of protecting the cubs. 40: As is often the case, just as you go to photograph an animal it turns its back on you. In this case i thought i would just go with it. 41: A Masai giraffe, which is one of the 9 subspecies of Giraffe. | 39

 40 | 41

 42

43 | 44 | 42: Perhaps the best find of the trip. A male leopard rests in a tree adjacent to our safari bus. We ventured back several hours later but he hadn't moved, it was only then we noticed the half eaten animal (43:) in an adjacent branch. 44: One of the many species of vulture spotted on the safari. Below: the actual safari route taken for the day.

45 | Gorillas in the mist

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest The forest is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth, where half the world's population of the highly endangered Mountain Gorillas live. | 46 | 47 | 48 | 49

 50 | Ntarama church massacre

51 | 52 | 53 | 54 | 50: Rwandan Genocide: face the inner sanctum of evil in the human spirit here. The one on one, up close and personal massacres are revealed without pity as your eyes slowly adjust to the dim lighting and your mind staggers to discern the exhibits - which it will. 10,000 people are buried here- not a dry eye from any of us. 51: Bark canoe on Lake Bunyonyi 52-53: Lunch at the Hotel Rwanda 54: Weaver bird in flight over Lake Bunyonyi
