38: -Alain and Krasimir had a 9 hour conference call. -Remember when Alain was playing cricket onboard and he kicked the ball right at some little kid. When the kid was upset, Alain said that in case if he want to complaint to his mother his name was Damon -Alain joined the Deck 12 Cricket team, which he'd been looking forward to for some time. Alain beat away everything Sai threw at him, to Sai's enormous frustration, despite gale-force winds. -Alain’s motivational speeches are one of a kind -“Leave a legacy” -While playing table tennis you back hand shot does not work, your second hand comes into play. -Playing table tennis in the provision area . . . and the poor FOM in yellow who was constantly being smashed balls at?! -You brought in the T&D Manager's position onboard -you were relieving GM Arjan onboard and spent entire nights with ‘superfoods’ studying for your MBA? -clocks are being turned forward onboard The World, Alain is usually late . . . -you preached that great leaders act at all times as if they are being watched . . . we will remember. -you preached the importance of the RSVP code . . . we will remember. -you recounted old times of 80 kind of wines onboard The World – which were all from Chile?! -you have interviews with new potential interns – one thing every intern interviewed by you will always remember is that we are ambassadors of our country wherever we go. -Bruno dropped a curry on the floor during your lunch with GM Arjan in East. The looks on yours and Bruno’s face were priceless. -Alain, Krasimir and the Hotel Stores Team rearranged the provision stores, dressed in overalls and under the sound of Rolling Stones and other heavy stuff. | REMEMBER WHEN....
39: "Leaving a legacy" | -We had 06:00hrs breakfast meeting in the Officer’s Mess on the day of re-opening after Dry-dock 2013. -The motivational exercises during the DD 2013. -We had hourly meetings on Deck 11 on the last days before Dry-dock. -We washed the deck as early as 06:00hrs the day after Dry-dock re-launch. -Your passion for food and beverage is so contagious, when in your role as Director of F&B in your earlier days onboard; it was amazing to work with you to get the F&B level up. -I remember a visit to an amazing Italian restaurant in NY, Esca where we went one night, where the most delicious food was served in an amazing ambiance with excellent wines. -Not enough hours in the day when you came onboard for a visit, you never managed to complete your entire agenda, which we all knew beforehand as it was very, very ambitious . -Even on Alain’s last month in the office, he still took on new projects, and worked effortlessly to complete those. -Always able to find a secret pot where Alain could take some money for a necessary upgrade for the ship and he is also fantastic to sell an upgrade to the Board. In other words, Alain can sell ice cubes to an Eskimo. -You always see “the look” on Alain’s face whenever someone said something can’t be done -Alain said the answer is YESwhat is the question? (I do!) -Maggie would come by asking for “5 minutes with Mr. G” -R.S.V.P. -At a Korean BBQ restaurant nobody could read the menu so Alain starts asking people to pick a number and that’s how he ordered. There was so much food that we had to hold our drinks in our hands. Ask Alain about the ‘blow up sheep’ on the menu! -Spreadsheets! -Never met an individual who gave so much of himself for the people he worked with. -Gators vs Tigers is now the biggest game of the season. -Alain became an American! -Alain’s famous speech to all interns “not only will you be representing yourself, you will be representing your school and your country.” -Celebrated the big “40” on board.. -"I mean you no harm. I seek your greatest good." – Jim Meehan -Alain asked the DS team “how many losers are still here”
40: Thank you Alain..... | Dear Alain, I am sure there is no possible way for you to remember all of the small things you have done each and every day to push forward The World’s mission statement or support the individuals that have worked alongside you (as there are too many to count!) but I must not let you forget what a profound impact you have made on my life personally. Only three years ago, you gave me the chance of a lifetime to embark on The World as an intern and have continuously invested in my professional growth since then. Each step of the way, you have shared words of wisdom that have kept me focused on what matters: not only the mission statement of The World, but what I stand for and represent as an individual and as a bottom-up leader. Your positive “best of the best” attitude and catchy acronyms truly make a difference (ICAN and RSVP!) and your punchlists and binders will be fondly remembered Although, I am slightly bitter that my only fellow Auburn grad will leave me hanging to fend for myself in an office full of gator fans However you would not be the Alain that I know, if you did not continue to innovate and push the boundaries for yourself, so I am excited to see all that you will accomplish on your new adventure. Keep in touch and please remember what a difference you have made. You truly will be missed. WAR EAGLE, Kari | Dear Alain, Your ability to “change The WORLD” is evident to anyone who has been onboard the ship since your arrival. It is those of us who have been blessed with the opportunity to work closely with you over the past few years that can truly appreciate what an extraordinary leader can accomplish. It is also why we will always look to follow in your footsteps, no matter where they may lead. You are an inspiration to me and to those around you and your legacy will only continue to grow as you pursue greater challenges and new opportunities. I have to personally thank you for my success because without your operation/hotel leadership I would not have been able to sell with the conviction that we truly are the “best of the best.” John Maxwell once said that “People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision” and I will never forget how your tireless efforts and unwavering support has led us to a place that only a short while ago was an impossible dream. Thank you and best wishes, Jennifer McClain | Perry's foundest memories of Alain: Some of the best times were had at 37,000 feet in a plane flying to and from the ship (Sydney to LA comes to mind). Once he got onboard you would not see him again until it was time for him to leave. Renato’s bottle of Centenario was put back in his cabinet empty.
41: Dear Alain – It was truly a privilege to work with you at The World. Although there were some hard, stressful and rough times, I fondly remember the camaraderie we shared in bringing the unique lifestyle to fruition and achieving success. Some of the moments that come to mind -- those late nights - Pat, you and I - preparing for Board Meetings and then late nights after Board Meetings , our healthy discussions (maybe a few arguments thrown in) on elements of the onboard lifestyle, the long hours preparing for budget presentations, fun times selecting fabric, carpet, chandeliers, chairs, paintings for dry-dock, (well, I was having fun!), what to do with the onboard spa?!, amazing dinners and the introduction to the art of the cocktail, re-shaping the team culture and managing all the unrealistic expectations – and then turning them into reality. All in all, it was an extraordinary experience. Working with you pushed me to be the best I could be and your passion your constant quest for excellence made everyone strive for perfection. So, the time has come for a new chapter in your life. You do not need it but I wish you the best of luck – I am certain you will succeed with any dream you decide to chase. Big Hug - Nikki
