BC: "To the lover of pure wilderness, Alaska is one of the most wonderful countries in the world." - John Muir

FC: Cruising Alaska | Our First Anniversary

Alaska | The Last Frontier! | In September 2011 to celebrate our first anniversary, we booked a cruise on Princess Cruises to tour Alaska. Starting in Seattle, we visited Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria Canada

view from our room | view from our room | Puget Sound

Public Market | Public Market | We stayed at the Westin in Downtown Seattle about 2 blocks from the Public Market and Puget Sound | We flew into Seattle a day and a half early to tour the town. Seattle is a beautiful city and we fit in as much as we could in the time we were there.

We walked all over town. On our first day there we went down to the Public Market at Pikes Place. We got to see the famous fish throwing booth. Such amazing fruits, seafood and flowers sold at the market.

The weather in Seattle was great. At least 80 degrees each day. We actually had to go to the store to buy some warm weather clothes. When you are going on an Alaskan cruise, shorts and tank tops are not on the top of your packing list. On day 2 we visited the Space Needle, the Experience Music Project and the International Fountain at Seattle Center.

In Pioneer Square, we took the Underground Seattle tour. The Seattle Underground is a network of underground passageways and basements in downtown Seattle that was ground level at the city's origin in the mid-19th century. After the streets were elevated these spaces fell into disuse, but have become a tourist attraction in recent decades.

A trip to Seattle would not be complete without Starbucks. This is the very first Starbucks store.

We sailed on Princess Cruises. They decorated our room to celebrate our anniversary and we had a bottle of wine waiting for us inside!

Our first day at sea was relaxing. After exploring the ship and having a couples massage, we decided it would be nice to play cards on our balcony. Richard kept winning at cards. 50% was because he is good at it, but the other 50% was because he was cheating. Remind me not to sit with my back against a tinted window! We had a great time, but did get a bit stir crazy.

Anniversary Dinner and our special dessert!

Ketchikan Our first stop was Ketchikan, We visited Saxman Village and walked around town. We found our way to the Red Snapper Bar, down a back alley and it was great. We had the bar to ourselves (we were surprised more people did not find it) Yeah for exploring.

 Cruising the Fjords and Glaciers

 Cruising Tracy Arm Fjord

The next port we visited was Juneau. Since we spent the morning on the ship cruising the glaciers, we only had half a day to explore Juneau. We decided to take the Mount Roberts Tramway to the top of the mountain to get a view of Downtown Juneau and Douglas Island. At the top, we toured a museum, watched a film on the Tlingit indian tribe, and saw a bald eagle and nest up close and personal. Juneau is the only port where we had a good amount of rain, but it did not ruin our day! | Juneau

 Our ship, the Sapphire Princess

Skagway is a beautiful, small and quaint town populated during the Klondike Gold Rush. We decided to take a train ride onboard the historic White Pass & Yukon Route built in 1898. It travels over 20 miles with grades up to 4% into the Yukon ending in Canada. Such a fun ride | Skagway

After our ride, we walked down main street and visited the Red Onion Saloon, a one-time brothel. There are lots of cute little shops and we got a definite small town feeling. | Skagway
