S: South Africa trip 2011!!!!

FC: SOUth African ccc trip april 25-may 8, 2011

London! our first detour on our trip lands us in the royal city... 4 days before the wedding!

A very warm welcome to south africa greeted us as we stepped off of the plane

Johannesburg, our first stop, is the capitol of south africa. our tour of downtown gave us a good look at urban african lifestyles. IT is extremely different from america in so many ways, but it is beautiful nonetheless.

South african government offices are abundant in the city.

monuments such as these are found all over in jo'burg. they honor many events like freedom and peace, or even other events like a gold rush.

fun in a mall is just what we needed :)

A night at the carnivore meant one thing: MEAT! octopus, blood sausage, antelope, boar, and much more.

Day 2- Soweto! it may have a not so great history, but there are things to do. markets, performers, and so much more.

these monuments represent the independence of south africa from the british in the early 1900's.

When people think of africa, they usually think of this. informal settlements and villages littered the african landscape.

This is the vegas of south africa. a 5 block radius of casinos. WOW!

the regina mundi catholic church isthe site of shootings and genecides during apartheid. it is in the heart of soweto and over 500 people att3end mass every week.

Hector Peterson was the first to be killed in the protests for education. his monument is built to honor every life lost in apartheid.

Safari time! After hours of singing and dancing, a 3 day safari-break awaited us in pilanesburg. we saw elephants, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, lions, and much more.

A beautiful sunset over the serengetti ended our magnificent day.

A 2 hour connecting flight landed us in knysna, home of the world record holder for oyster eating.

Featherbed nature reserve, one of the 5 native forests left in south africa, was our next stop on our adventure. hikes through this reserve can take up to 5 years to book, and sometimes you don't even get a spot. we had an amazing view of the Indian ocean the whole hike, and we saw some magnificent sea caves along the way.

cape town was the final stop on our 2 week tour. table mountain, one of south africas national monuments, provided an astonishing view over the cape.

robben Island, the prison that held nelson mandela for 16 years of his imprisonment, was extremely historical and interesting. a former WWI navy base, this jail held over 400 political prisoners in it's time.

24 hours left in south africa. an amazing feast at the africa cafe left us full and happy. our guide pieter surprised us with a "champagne" toast on top of table mountain which let us see all of the city. our final day meant one thing: SHOPPING! we stopped at the V&A waterfront for some great buys, and a last 15 minute shopping spree at an open air market. WOW!

After a 13 hour flight from cape town international airport, we landed in london once again, hich gave us a chance to explore the city (on a double decker bus!) we had a very nice tour guide who left no info. out, and it was great!
