1: Corvette Trip - August 23 to October 1, 2009 -- 9,638 miles of discovery Novato, CA/Wendover, NV/Cheyenne, WY/Rapid City, SD/Dickinson, ND/ Redvers, Saskatchewan/Kenora,ONT/ Thunder Bay, ONT/Ste Sault Marie, ONT/Ottawa, ONT/Montreal, Quebec/Rochester, NY/Millwood, NY/Lambertville, NJ/Blue Ridge Mtn Pkwy, VA/Great Smokey Mountains, NC/Bowling Green,KY/Nashville, TN/Memphis, TN/ Little Rock and Hot Springs, AR/Bristow, OK/Shamrock, TX/Gallup, NM, Show Low, AZ/ Chandler, AZ/Las Vegas, NV/Three Rivers, CA/Novato, CA

2: First night in Wendover, Nevada. Drove through Park City, Utah the site of the Winter Olympics. Then on to Fort Bridger, Wyoming, a restored Fort on the Oregon Trail. Drove on the Lincoln Highway to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Restored train station and Union Pacific train yard. 613 miles to Wendover 588 miles to Cheyenne

5: From Cheyenne, Wyoming to Fort Laramie then on to Rapid City, South Dakota and a visit to Mt. Rushmore. 336 miles to Rapid City

7: Downtown Rapid City, South Dakota Bronze Past Presidents on every corner

8: On the way to Badlands National Park near Rapid City, passed through the town of Wall, which was advertised for miles.....Wall Drugs famous for everything the traveler might need or want. 270 miles to Spearfish

10: Stopped at Ellsworth Air & Space Museum on the way to lunch in Sturgis which is famous for a huge yearly motorcycle rally and Jack Daniels sponsorship. Then on to Deadwood where Wild Bill Hickock was killed.

11: From Spearfish, SD to Devils Tower, Wyoming Beautiful scenery and lots of prairie dogs.

13: Stopped at Belle Fourche, South Dakota which is the geographic center of the United States 326 miles to Dickinson

14: Dickinson, North Dakota ...fields of hay and hay trucks on the road to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Tons of grasshoppers, too.

16: Crossed into Saskatchewan, Canada at Northgate, a very small border crossing in North Dakota. Stayed at a Farmhouse B&B owned by Lorna and Andy Silvestre. 381 miles to Redvers, Saskatchewan

17: Passed through Winnipeg, Manitoba on the way to Kenora, Ontario - Red River area and train station in Winnipeg.

18: 377 miles to Kenora, Ontario

19: Beautiful drive from Kenora to Thunder Bay, located on the upper end of Lake Superior. Stayed at historic Port Arthur Hotel. Thunder Bay is 32 miles from the US border at Minnesota. Lake Superior looks more like an ocean. Can't see US from Canada.

20: Eagle Canyon in Dorian, Ontario walking over a 600 meter suspension bridge (longest in Canada). Also stopped at Quimet Canyon, a beautiful gorge. 301 miles to Thunder Bay

21: Batchawanna Bay, just West of Sault Ste Marie. The Voyageurs' Lodge. 412 miles to Batchawanna Bay

22: Sault Ste Marie locks. Stopped at local Post Office to buy some stamps. 457 miles to Pembroke (2 hrs short of Ottawa)

24: Ottawa, Canada

26: Ottawa Canada's Capital

27: Auberge Le Pomerol, a boutique hotel near Old Town Montreal. Spent two nights here. Loved the City atmosphere, especially Old Town. Outdoor eating, Tons of people on the streets in the evening. Parked the car at the Hotel and walked everywhere. 239 miles to Montreal, Quebec

30: Restaurant opened 1725 Cobblestone Streets of Old Town

32: Eating Poutine for lunch (french fries with gravy and smoked meat)

33: Took the subway to window shop in Eatons and The Bay Company.

34: Entered the USA at Cornwall, New York Visited the Eisenhower Lock on the St. Lawrence Seaway. No ships were due to navigate the lock for 3 hours. Departed for Rochester on the NY State Thruway.

35: Drove through Mennonite country. Couldn't resist stopping at Lowe's for this great photo. 346 miles to Rochester, New York

36: Rochester, New York. My grade school (Francis Parker No. 23 and the flat we lived in on Edgerton Street

38: Lunch in a Catskill Mountain town

39: Drove to Millwood, NY through the Catskills. Stayed with the Mathisson family for 2 nights. 330 miles to Millwood

40: Left Millwood and navigated into New York City over the George Washington Bridge to Lambertville, New Jersey. Stayed at the Lambertville Inn with Chris and Henry for two nights. Explored Lambertville, New Hope, PA, across the Delaware River. Very historic areas. Had a great visit. 112 miles to Lambertville

44: Left Lambertville, NJ and drove through Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, and ended up in Oakton, Virginia......All in 3 1/2 hours! Visited an old Peace Corps friend, Barbara Douds. Headed out for Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway. 296 miles to Luray, Virginia

46: Stayed in a cabin at the Skyline Resort inside the Park. Saw a bear and lots of deer and turkeys. Fall colors just starting to appear.

47: Floyd, North Carolina, origin of Blue Grass Music. Stayed at Hotel Floyd, next to a graveyard. 241 miles to Floyd

50: Blue Ridge Mtn Pkwy elevations to 5200 feet... Amazing ivy near Waynesville, N.Carolina 266 miles to Waynesville Gas - 93 octane $2.60/gal

51: Great Smokey Mountain National Park

53: Came out of Natl Park into wild civilization of Gatlinburg, Tenn..... Kentucky, here we come! 368 miles to Bowling Green

54: Toured the GM Corvette Assembly Plant, a 1 1/2 mile walking tour of amazing robotics

55: Spent lots of time touring the Corvette Museum. Beautiful vintage Corvettes. 66 miles to Nashville

56: Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Resort. 3,000 rooms with indoor landscaping, restaurants, shopping and ballrooms. WELCOME TO NASHVILLE!

57: Took a City Tour of Nashville. Had a very rainy day. Stopped in downtown, Music Row recording studios, Ryman Auditorium "The Mother Church of Country Music" and the newly built Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum.

59: Terrific tour of Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. "Dry" county, so, alas, no samples 222 miles to Savannah, Tennessee

60: Lunch in Lynchburg & visit to Walking Horse Museum | Shiloh Natl Military Park where in 1862 100,000 Civil War troops clashed in the fields and woods. First major battle in the western theatre. Best preserved battlefield. 30,000 troups from both sides killed in 3 days in April 1862.

61: Detoured to check out Mississippi on the way to Memphis. Lots of cotton and swamps, turtles and beavers. 133 miles to Memphis

65: Walked to Beale St from our hotel. Great live R&B music. Lots of drinking on the time!

68: Took a street car to the Mississippi for a 1 1/2 hr paddle boat ride. Met a great Aussie couple from Melbourne.

70: Stopped in Little Rock to see President Clinton's Library. Took a City tour on a street car.

71: The Arlington Hotel built in 1925. Many bathhouses line main street. Hot Springs temp.147, outside temp. 90. Hotel..... Air Conditioned! 194 miles to Hot Springs, Arkansas

72: Arkansas to Oklahoma to begin our Route 66 experience. 273 miles to Bristow, OK

73: Red soil of Oklahoma. Passed through Oklahoma City on the way to Route 66 museums.

75: Shamrock, Texas, had a 10 oz NY strip steak with salad and potato for $14.99 YUM! Old Conoco gas station used in the movie Cars. On to Amarillo, then New Mexico. 533 miles to Gallup

76: Cute lunch stop. Mark had to try the Alien beer. Good Mexican food.

79: Window Rock, AZ. Tribal center for the Navajo Nation. Memorial to WWI Wind Talkers and unknown Indian soldiers who died in WWII. (Only time on the trip our car navigation did not register location) | An example of one of the many sweat lodges on the Navajo Indian land.

80: On to the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park. Gorgeous rock formations and petrographs.

82: Drove to Show Low, AZ. and hit the Annual Car Parade. Stayed at hotel on West Deuce of Clubs....(their Main Street). 213 miles to Show Low

85: Visited friends Robin and Diane Davis who live in Chandler, just outside Phoenix. Saw the Diamond Backs vs.the Padres. Great indoor Baseball has to be cause that day, in late September it was 103 degrees! Had a Great Visit! 218 miles to Chandler

88: Hoover Dam

89: Las Vegas, here we come! 335 miles to Las Vegas

92: Left Las Vegas heading for Sequoia Natl Park. Pretty desolate entering California at Barstow. Really lucked out at the Tehachapi to see a train wind its way through.

94: Stayed in Three Rivers, CA, just outside the Park. 396 miles to Three Rivers

95: Quite smokey due to a forest fire. Talk about a windy road!

97: 323 miles home to Novato Mark washed the car one final time. He took off the bra and found....tons of dead grasshoppers which we had been carting around since North Dakota... | Wildlife encountered on our trip...alive and alas, dead.....besides grasshoppers Buffalo Possum Bear Chipmunks Deer Armadillo Raccoon Squirrels Beaver Groundhog Prong-horned Sheep Skunk Elk Woodchuck Big-horned Sheep Bald Eagle Moose Coyote Prairie Dogs Vultures Turtle Red Fox Wild Horses Roadrunners
