S: Del Norte Redwoods Vacation 2009

FC: The JAFARI Family 2009 Del Norte Redwoods Trip | Do it Sam, DO IT!!

On a Saturday morning, June 27, 2009, Davar, Beverly, Samantha, Bobbie and Tabitha left for a two-week vacation. (Michael was meeting up with us on Sunday in Petaluma because he spent a week in Berkeley prior to our departure.) Michael and Sammy decided they might as well go as they had nothing else better to do. Little did they know that this trip was going to be a learning experience for all of us, as Michael and Sam had not lived with us for 4 - 5 years while they were in college. Easy-going Bobbie is always a blessing to be around, and we had Tabitha's quick wit and Irish temper. (My "Mother's Curse" is going as strong as ever!) Our vacations have always been "different" from the average vacation - however - we all struggled to get the most out of our vacation. We played hard and TRIED to relax within the small confines of the R.V. and our small campsite. We managed to cram 6 people in the jeep while going places (illegally I might add) and in the end we had a lot more good times than bad. Here are some of our memories . . . Beverly Jafari (a.k.a. Tyrant #2)

Our first night was at a KOA in Petaluma. Michael met us Sunday morning with the jeep, having spent a week at Berkeley.

The KOA was JAM-PACKED with families with small children. They offered a Magic Show, Ice Cream sundaes and a petting zoo the night we arrived. | Tabitha was allowed to play on the playground. Up to 12 years of age were allowed. She looked SO BIG!!

Mill Creek Campground Del Norte Redwoods

Our site is finally set up!

Obviously, too much fun at Berkeley!

Tabitha and Davar look for sticks | Sam was concerned about them causing erosion

Davar starts his walking stick the first night

 Davar Whittling

 Our campsite

My 1st watercolor attempt of trees in our campsite

 View from our campsite

 The view from our campsite

Land of the Banana Slugs! | Our camp from the RV

 Bobbie's hideaway and her braid

Our campsite with Sam "Shopping" | "Where is he, the lazy bum!!"

 The trees over our campsite

 The Smith River

"The Rock" is where people jump off of if they are brave enough. The Smith River is the second cleanest river in the United States. It is so clear that you can see big boulders under the surface of the water. However, it is so deep that when you jump in, you never touch them (and that includes Davar). | Davar getting ready to jump - "Butt-Crack" Mike - and away he goes!

I was already wet! Ha! Ha!

Our camp after a day at beach or the river

At camp we constantly played games, whittled, painted, colored, knit, read, biked or slept.

Backgammon tournaments CONSTANTLY between Michael, Samantha & Davar

Another Backgammon Tournament!! | We went shopping for crab! Michael, Samantha, Bobbie and I ate to our hearts content! | Our campsite after we had been there a couple of days!

Tabitha whittled a piece of wood into a pencil and then painted it

Mom's attempts at figuring out trees | Samantha's First Watercolor

This is behind our campsite. By Mom

Enderts Beach | It's an approx. 1/2 - 1 mile hike down a trail to a secluded beach. Davar flew his China Kite and had a great time. I thought the kids were going to get stuck by high tide!

The top of a redwood tree from our camp. Frustrating not to know how to paint "wind"!

I was trying to figure out how to put in the background - never did figure out foreground and depth!

Looking up from the camp site

We went to the Smith River several times . . .

Back at our camp site . . . Charlene arrives for a few days

Tabitha took these pictures with her camera | Charlene took Bobbie & Tabitha to the Oregon Caves one day

 . . . some more of Tabitha's pictures

#1 | #2 | Jafari "Road Trip" | An example of the | Jeep Key

 #3 | #4 | Gets the 'ole blood pumping!

The "TIME-OUT" Stump | California Highway Patrol

 Davar & Tabitha

 The tide pools were beautiful!

Here we are crossing the ocean at low tide to go to the light house. The rocks are slippery. Easy to get a sprained ankle! The tidepools were everywhere. At high tide, all of the rocks are covered by water and the light house is an island.

 Crescent City Light House

 A Bob on a Log

The Crescent city Light House is said to be "Haunted". It was a beautiful day to see the light house. (Of course, we illegally got there by having too many people in the jeep.) Thought a highway patrol was going to stop us on the way back to camp.

The view looking south from the light house

View looking south from the Light House

A lot of driftwood is seen on the beaches in Crescent City. They have bad winter storms.

The tide was beginning to come in around the Light House by the time we left

The view looking north to Crescent City from the Light House

The park was built by volunteers. Even the materials were donated. | The City Park | Samantha Texting

 Show Offs!

Tabitha texting and hiding from everyone during their game of "tag"

 Michael's "I have 13 camels" persona

The kids had more fun playing at the park - didn't have to spend a penny!

We spent several days going to the beach (and putting up umbrellas)

 Then the kids went swimming in the cold ocean! | Some reading . . . | Some soccer . . . | . . . and some rest

 Cell phone texting and frisbee

Davar tore his jeans while setting up the umbrella. Now they are becoming an apron. | Always texting!!

The average temperature was 59 - 72 degrees during the day (depending on the fog conditions)

The Smith River at Jedediah campground was my favorite

Running away from Michael because . . . | He's swimming to get them!!

Samantha & Tabitha have been trying to hit Michael with rocks!!

 Now is it Michael's turn!

 The Howland Road

 DAR Memorial Grove

Pictures taken from the jeep on the Howland Road The DAR Memorial Grove

Picking wild berries from side of the road

Picking wild berries from the side of the road

Riding on bikes (and scooter) around the campground

The river that goes through the campground (seen from the bridge opposite)

Davar took this picture from the walk to the Chart House. (Michael dropped us off first, then went to get the others, but he made us walk to the pier in the distance for our exercise!) It was a beautiful walk!!

Davar found this bottle and threw it back in. Tabby found it later after our dinner.

Sand Sculpture we saw while | walking to the Chart House

The "Note in the Bottle" that Davar threw back into the ocean on our walk. I told him that it was bad luck not to put something in it!

Our favorite restaurant in Crescent City. Good clam chowder and fish & chips!

The restaurant is on the pier. Lots of sea lions.

 Pictures from the Chart House

The Boat Dock next to the Chart House

After dinner at the Chart House, we found a note in a bottle on the beach. Money & a note - 3 days old

Putting the note back in the bottle with some change

and as the sun sets on our vacation . .

It was a beautiful time of family & nature. It was also a learning time of consideration of others & respect. | Mom | The Back Cover is a picture from our campsite
