10: When we weren't in class we had the opportunity to get involved in the community through activities such as teaching English and volunteering in an orphanage.

12: SAN JUAN TEQUACO

13: Here we worked down by the coast with Al n' Gail digging the foundation for a kitchen wall that won't wash away in rainy season as well as a cistern in a town that only had two toilets. | One of the town's only toilets:

14: Some of the work in San Juan also included bending rebar, moving large rocks to tier the land for farming, and collecting kindling for a widow.

15: There were several unwanted guests in the girls dorm and many of us were covered in bites by the end of the week.

16: On another trip, our team went to * Tactic * to work with Les & Rita. One of the things we did was run week-long Vacation Bible School.

21: Other work we did in Tactic included painting a church and a school, helping to dig the foundation for a new school, and moving cement blocks that were to be used in the construction of the school. We also visited a very poor rural Mayan village.

22: In Tactic we learned about how coffee is grown and processed . . .

23: . . . and how to make a traditional Guatemalan meal.

25: In Tactic we also had the opportunity to see shaman (also referred to as witch doctors) in action both outside the Catholic church and in a cave. They often combine Mayan gods and religious practices with Catholicism. | - RELIGION -

26: Semana Santa (Easter Week) | Processions

27: Exhausted, we fell asleep in the back of a café in the wee hours of the morning. | We spent a long night watching processions and doing street dramas with YWAM.

28: We all enjoyed the 5 weeks we spent living with our Guatemalan families in San Pedro.

49: E | Ever since the civil war ended they have daily replaced the white rose of peace that rests on a monument in the palace. | Guatemala is a country deeply scarred by the bloody civil war that lasted from 1960 -1996 making it the longest civil war in the history of Latin America. | Many people disappeared during the war and an estimated 200,000 were killed | Guatemala is a very diverse land with about 40% of the population being Mayan, 40% ladino (mixed), and the remainder primarily being of European descent. The national bird is the quetzal which symbolizes freedom (something victims of colonialism can appreciate) because the bird will die if kept in captivity. | A QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE COUNTRY:
