BC: Until we return... Aloha!

FC: Hawaii 2011

July 31 - August 14, 2001 Mom, Heather, and Lisa's vacation to Oahu and The Big Island of Hawaii! ALOHA! | Hapuna Beach Big Island

 Ko Olina...The place of Joy

Marriott's Ko 'Olina Beach Resort ... so beautiful! One can't help but relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings.. | When your body is still on East Coast time, you can beat the crowds to the lounge chairs!

Flower Lei's, Hula dancers, sea turtles, palm trees, ocean sunsets, flowers, POG, Li Hing Mui, Maui Chips, fresh lychee, and Macadamia nuts ... the spirit of Aloha! | Can I keep him???

Shave Ice... A day in Hawaii is not complete without it

Favorite flavor combination... Guava, Lychee, and none other than...Li Hing Mui! | And even sometimes at night!

A day at the beach with friends Bobby, Melissa, and baby Savannah included private surfing lessons by Bobby, himself! However, only Heather was brave enough to give it a try! She did manage to catch a few good waves!

The rest of us relaxed on the beach cheering our surfers on! | The board was almost too big to carry, especially in the windy conditions of the day. We thought she might take off as she walked across the beach!

While sightseeing on Oahu, we ventured out to find some ties to the Silva family. | Daddy lived here until he was 11. 2425 Anihinihi St., Pearl City | Great Grandma Theodore's House (Grandpa Silva's mom) 9 Iliahi St., Honolulu | Daddy's elementary school, Palisades Elementary

We also found our way to China-Man's Hat, Waikiki, and Sandy Beach. And we snorkeled in this awesome cove down a steep cliff off the highway

With 12 days of snorkelling, we saw an amazing amount of beautiful, and sometimes creepy, sea life. | Humuhumunukunukuapua'a | Raccoon Butterflyfish | Male Parrotfish and Yellowtail Coris | Ornate Wrasse and Sargent Majors | Vonna Sea Urchin | Orangespine Surgeonfish | Threadfin Butterflyfish Lau-hau | Pencil Sea Urchin | White Spotted Pufferfish | Orangespine Surgeonfish and Yellow Tang | Trumpetfish | Female Parrotfish, Sargent Majors, and an Ornate Wrasse | Moray Eel | Moorish Idols | Picasso Triggerfish | Orangeband Surgeonfish

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a Lagoon Triggerfish | Honu Green Sea turtle | Convict Tang | Pink Snorkeled Shaka-fish | Blue-goggled Pizzafish | Underwater Graffiti - 30' deep, written in cinder blocks | Yellow Tangs and Goldring Surgeonfish | Whitespotted Pufferfish | Longnose Butterfly Lau-wiliwili | Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse and Christmas Wrasse | Yellow Tang | Snorkleheads! | Social Butterflyfish | White Tipped Reef Shark

 The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle

Honu means "peaceful heart". After watching a turtle in the water, there is no doubt why this animal is named Honu. Even in shallow waters, where the waves keep crashing, tossing the Honu up and down, back and forth, the Honu just lazily eats off the rocks. No worries, just calm, and peaceful. We should all be more like the Honu.

Whoever says that white sandy beaches are the best has never played in an Hawaiian jacuzzi!

There was lots to do and explore at the beach, besides snorkeling. After an hour or two of looking at fish, we loved basking in the pools formed by lava.

Dinner and fun at Bubba Gump's Shrimp Company | Wow Lisa! You really do have your daddy's feet! | That was one mighty hot chili pepper! | WATER!!! | Is it just me, or does it feel hot in here?

even the local birds were enjoying leftovers at the table next to us! | Look honey! They left us Tuna! My favorite! | Happy times at meals...

We love strolling this sleepy little tourist town on the Big Island. Its charm includes open-air restaurants and quaint shops | Kailua-Kona | Royal Kona Resort (iconic hotel) | Moku'aikaua Church - first Christian church in all of Hawaii | Ali'i Drive

Kahuluu Beach Park Kailua-Kona | Hangin' Loose...

 There's that post-snorkel hair-do again!

It was rather windy on the trail as well, and Heather was in no condition to hike! | A drive to the end of the road on the northwest tip of the Big Island brings you to the Pololu Valley Lookout. You can hike down to the beach below, but after reading the warnings, we opted against it.

Hiking through the rainforest in Hawaii Volcanos National Park to the Thurston Lava Tube and the bottom of the Kilauea Iki Crater | Hawaii Volcanos

The steam from the crater vents and the continuous misty rain left us a little soggy, to say the least!

A drive down the Chain of Craters Road to the dry sunny shore had us dried out in a snap! | Ya think? I guess we gotta stop! | Holei Sea Arch | This lava flow is from 2007

Hawaiian Style! | No Rain... No Rainbows! | Looking into the Halemaumau Crater... | Hot and steaming, even glowing, as could be seen at dusk

Heather always seemed to be climbing! (And she wonders why she always has bruises on her) | Even in our villa!

Best sissies ever! | Mmmmm! Lava Flows! | Hawaiian princesses, doing a sunset Hula dance

One never quite knows what one will find while driving around the island! | As cat lovers, we can't resist the stray cats that live on the Big Island | Named after our very own Lisa-Pizza, I'm sure! | I'm so afraid! | A Zebra??? Seriously!

After seeing lots of Hawaiian graffiti in the lava fields, the girls created some of their own. "HE>I" was modeled after a Christian a bumper sticker we frequently saw | Cactus? Who'da thunk?

Punalu'u, Black Sand Beach | Along the way to the volcanos, we took a brief stop to play in the fine black sand and see some more turtles.

In keeping our family's Punalu'u tradition, we took the "pose on the leaning tree" pictures

Purple flowering tree | A Money Tree! It must have been out of season, because we didn't see any money on it! | Hibiscus Flowers | Really BIG Hibiscus | The beauty of the Hawaiian flowers and plants

Crazy Aloe Vera plant | African tulip flower | Weed variety of Ginger. Why aren't all weeds this pretty? | Torch Ginger | Scary Spider | Heliconia

The Kalapana Painted Church, built in 1923, was moved here to avoid destruction by approaching lava flow in May 1990 | These homes are what is left of the village of Kalapana. It appeared that some of them had been moved back into. Crazy!

The summit of Mauna Kea, including the observatories | It's rare to see the summit of either of these mountains, except from an airplane! | The Big Island... Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa | The summit of Mauna Loa, barely peeking above the clouds

Our final hours of sight-seeing lead us to some tourist stops outside of Hilo. | Rainbow Falls | No Lisa! Don't do it! | This one, she could only climb on, not UP!

Boiling Pots, Mom was very disappointed that she could not go to the caves | Akaka Falls | Huge Banyan Tree at Rainbow Falls

Sizes: mini|medium|large|enormous
