1: June 17,18 Berlin June 19 train to Cologne June 20,21 St Goar June 22 to Rothenburg June 23 to Stuttgart June 24,25 Munich Bill, Karen, Janelle & Adam | 2011 GERMANY VACATION

2: Ackselhaus In the Prenzlauer Berg section of old East Berlin is our home for the first 2 nights Great restaurants in the neighborhood and just blocks from the UBahn

4: Berlin | AMPELMANN is the East Berlin crossing sign-leading you to Communism | Beer Trolley | The Reichstag is the home of German Parliament

5: The Holocauset Memorial was built in 1999 There are 2711 plain gray slabs of varing sizes and shapes making a maze-like path that creates the feelings of disorientation, instability, groundlessness | The Cathedral of Berlin is the largest church in the city

6: THE WALL | The bricks run throughout Berlin denoting where the Wall once stood Thierry Noir, a french painter, first painted his work of art on the Wall in 1984 prior to reunification in 1989. Now 1300m of the Wall has been painted by 120 different artists and is known as the East Side Gallery

7: Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous of the 5 crossing points between East and West Berlin because of a standoff between Russian and American tanks in 1961

8: The Brandenburg Gate is the entry to Unter den Linden-a street of linden trees which leads to the Prussian palace It is one of Europe's most famous landmarks

9: The Victory Column celebrated the Prussian victory over the Danish in 1864 Before WWII the Nazi's moved the monument to the same street as the Brandenburg Gate The view is from the observation deck on the Victory Column | Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church built in 1891 was bombed by the Allies during WWII and has been left damaged as a reminder of the destruction war can cause

10: The replica spire is the exact size as the one on top of the Cathedral The building was started in 1248 and not finished until 1870 Even 14 hits during WWII did not collapse the Cathedral | COLOGNE

11: The Altar of the City Patrons was painted in 1442 and hidden during wars to protect it | Fruh is Cologne's local beer and brewery It is always served in the cylindrical glass

12: Janelle was bored waiting for Adam and took these pictures of herself with her camera on her lap

13: The Excelcior Hotel is located right across the street from the Cathedral and the Hauptbahnhof (train station) It is a 5 star hotel that has been family run since 1871

14: On the Rhein river staying in a 14th century castle What a view! The only way to cross the Rhein is by boat There are no bridges | St. Goar

15: The key to the room was best left at the front desk rather than trying to put it in your pocket

16: Schwarzwalderkirschtorte black forest cherry cake Germans and their compound words!

17: Burned down by the French in 1689 the castle sat in ruins for 2 centuries until purchased and renovated in 1914

18: We really did enjoy our stay at Castle Schoenburg

20: Riesling white grapes are the most popular grown in Germany They grow on steep southern facing hills and are cultivated later than most grapes in late October

21: The Rhein begins in the Swiss Alps and flows north 820 miles to the North Sea | Many towns along the Rhein are walled with towers. They were used to keep an eye out for invaders and rising water

23: In Bacharach we sampled 15 local wines The area is very proud of its Riesling | Castles and folklore of the Lorelei A beautiful girl who lures ships with her songs to the narrowest part of the Rhein where they crash on the rocks

24: Rhein | Rheinfels Castle in St. Goar has been the largest and most imposing castle on the Rhein for over 500 years It's nickname is "the Pit bull of the Rhein" The fortress was impenetrable until 1796 when Napoleon used explosives to seige the castle

26: Rothenburg ob der Tauber | The walled city was founded in 1070 It was spared in WWII by US asst secy of war John McCloy who knew of the historical importance of the Rothenburg and ordered he US Army to not use artillery in taking the town | Rothenburg ob der Tauber

27: The night watchman made his rounds from 9 pm until 3 am every night He carried a horn to warn of fire and a hellebarde weapon to protect himself | The Criminal Museum displays the German judicial punishment system of the last 1000 years

30: Munich | Hirschgarten is the largest beer garden in Munich with 8,000 seats

31: Nymphenburg Palace was the summer home of the Bavarian royalty | Nymphenburg Palace was the summer home of Bavarian royalty | Lamier Hof was conveniently 3 blocks from the Palace and 3 blocks from the beer garden

32: Dachau was the first and longest operating concentration camp It was liberated April 29, 1945 by the American allied forces | The Glockenspiel reinacts the wedding of Wilhelm V to Renata of Lorraine every day at 11 am and again at 5pm in the summer

33: Our last dinner in Germany had to include the local beverage | Auf Wiedersehen
