S: Italy Vacation 2008
BC: DEPARTED | Italy | July 2008
Italy | Venice Italy | ARRIVED June 2008 | is one of our most favorite places in the world and we had the pleasure to experience it with our wonderful friends; Wayne and Cathy Mattson.
Venice derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century BC. Venice has been known as the "City of Water, Canals, Masks & Bridges" and "The Floating City". Luigi Barzini described it in The New York Times as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man" and one of Europe's most romantic cities.
Burano is an island of Venice in Italy, famous for its lace and coloured houses.
The Rialto Bridge is the oldest and one of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.
Lake Como, Italy | Lake Como has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times. It has many villas and palaces (such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni, and Villa Carlotta). Many celebrities have or had homes on the shores of Lake Como, such as Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, and Sylvester Stallone. Lake Como is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy.
Lake Como, Italy | The lake is shaped much like the character "Y". The northern branch begins at the town of Colico, while the towns of Como and Lecco sit at the ends of the southwestern and southeastern branches respectively. The small towns of Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna are situated at the intersection of the three branches of the lake: a triangular boat service operates between them. Wayne was often the little mischief boy!!
 Menaggio | Lake Como | June 2008
Villa del Balbianello on Lake Como, Italy. In the spring of 2006, the movie Casino Royale was filmed in front of the villa. The villa doubles as a hospital where James Bond (Daniel Craig) is recovering, together with Vesper (Eva Green) and where the Swiss banker comes to get the code to transfer the money.
Gulf of Napoli | The Amalfi Coast is known for its production of limoncello liqueur as the area is a known cultivator of lemons, known as sfusato amalfitano in Italian, which are grown in terraced gardens along the entire coast between February and October. Amalfi is also a known maker of a hand-made thick paper which is called bambagina. Other renowned local products are a particular kind of anchovies (local Italian: alici) from Cetara, and the colorful handmade ceramics from Vietri. The Amalfi Coast is a popular destination among tourists. The city of Positano featured prominently in scenes of the film Under the Tuscan Sun.
 Almafi | Amalfi Coast
We sailed from Napoli to the Island of Capri and then on to the Amalfi Coast; Amalfi, Positano, and other exciting places.
 Montepulcioano | Italy
Ristorante Pozzo was one of our most favorite stops on the way to Napoli. Best steak ever!!
San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form "an unforgettable skyline".
 Tuscany | Italy
There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. We started from our villa and headed to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of cities is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears. We enjoy our visit!
Tuscuny, Wayne had to piss in every fountain!!We had such an awesome time on this trip and will remember it forever!!
Rome is one of world's most photogenic cities - not surprising when you remember what's here - The Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, St Peter's Square, Spanish Steps, Colosseum...
 Farewell Italy... until next time....
