FC: July-22-August 5, 2011 Kauai, Hawaii | Cordeiro Family Vacation

Smith's Tropical Paradise Luau Kapa'a, HI

 Samoan fire knife dance

Kalua pig roasted in the earthen imu oven | Lovely luau hair | Train ride through 30-acres botanical and cultural gardens | The pa‘ina (feast) was delicious!

 Poipu Beach

Located on the south shore, it's no wonder this beach has received numerous "top 5" beach awards worldwide. When the north beaches are stormy & rough, you can count on Poipu to be calm like a swimming pool! | Alexa took this great shot! | She also photographed the background picture!

Wailua Falls is an 80-foot beauty that feeds into the Wailua River. Made famous by being featured in the opening scene of "Fantasy Island".

 Wailua Falls

Opaeka'a Falls is located off the north branch of the Wailua River. Opaeka'a means "rolling shrimp"

 Opaeka'a Falls

 Ke'e Beach

We had a blast on north shore's Ke'e Beach! Ke'e's inviting lagoon is teaming with fish and perfect for snorkeling. We made sand castles and saw our first perfect sunset at this beach. Several movies and mini-series have been filmed there such as The Thorn Birds and Castaway Cowboys. Beware of this beach because it has strong currents and Lumaha'i's sneaker waves can run up on the beach and grab you before you know it. Gratefully, the ocean was amazingly calm on the days we visited!

 More Ke'e Beach North Shore

we love turtles | George took some shots with his underwater camera!

First trip to Poipu Beach, this boy was playing with a Sea Turtle!!

 Kauai Coffee Company

We so enjoyed this coffee that we bought some to bring home!

This natural wonder occurs as water rushes under a lava shelf and bursts through a very small opening at the surface. It spurts salt water 50 feet into the air!

 Spouting Horn

We took a train ride through dense tropical forest and past plantation era houses. Kilohana Plantation is a working farm, which grows more than 50 different types of exotic fruits and vegetables.

Oreo the half-longhorn | The train winds through fields where we encountered wild pigs, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys and of course Oreo. This train depot sits next to Luau Kalamaku, which is one of the best in Kauai!!

Extraordinary Day trip from Port Allen up the Na Pali Coast to do some snorkeling, be amazed by dolphins and enjoy a sunset dinner and drinks.

Inaccessible by car, Kauai’s Na Pali Coast may be viewed by foot, air and sea. It’s amazing to explore the coast by boat and that is what we did with Kauai Sea Tours. Na Pali is a 17-mile stretch of coastline on the Garden Isle‘s west side. It took millions of years of wind and water erosion to form these majestic 4,000-foot cliffs (“na pali” means “the cliffs” in Hawaiian) with lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls and mysterious sea caves. In ancient times, this impenetrable coast protected Hawaiians from invasion, and the waterfalls helped the natives build thriving fishing and farming settlements in the area. Thousands of Hawaiians lived within the Napali’s beautiful valleys. In more modern times, Na Pali Coast has been a backdrop for several Hollywood blockbusters, including Jurassic Park, the remake of King Kong and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Na Pali Coast is a very special place. The cliffs provide a rugged grandeur of deep, narrow valleys ending abruptly at the sea. Waterfalls and streams cut these narrow valleys while the sea carves cliffs at their mouths.

Iconic, mountainous shoreline on Kauai’s north shore

 Kauai Sea Tour

The Spinner Dolphin is a small dolphin found in off-shore tropical waters around the world. It is famous for its acrobatic displays in which they spin longitudinally along their axis as they leap through the air. We were blessed by their visit not once but twice on our boat tour and they did not disappoint! What a show they put on for us!

 Kauai Sea Tour

Crew mate Dane took great care of us! | Memories

Snorkeling off the back of the Kauai Sea Tour Boat in Na Pali.

humuhumunukunukuapua'a | UNDER THE SEA | Hawaii's State fish is the Trigger Fish!

No Matter how shallow the water, just sticking your head under revealed the most wondrous aquarium!

Wailua River Guides Kayak Tour Kapa'a, HI

Took a 5 hr guided tour of the Wailua River Valley

You will be awestruck by the dramatic Waimea Canyon. Waimea is a large canyon, approximately ten miles long and up to 3,000 feet deep. It is located on the western side of the Island of Kauai. The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River arising from the extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waialeale. It is one of the wettest places on earth (432" of rain per year). Kauai sits atop of an enormous volcano rising from the ocean floor. Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands, with lava flows dating 5 million years old. In the past 4 million yrs, rainwater from the slopes of Mount Waialeale have eroded Waimea Canyon. Over time, erosion to the exposed basalt has weathered from its original black to bright red leaving the signature Kauai "red dirt". It is this reddish colored earth that is most striking in the photos. You will notice the stark contrast between the red dirt, thick green shrubs and trees on the hillsides and lush green river valleys, & the often seen white clouds and fog.

Waimea Canyon State Park encompasses 1,866 acres and is a widely popular tourist attraction on the island. It provides a wilderness area with numerous hiking trails and scenic views. The 18-mile drive on Route 550 is the best way to get to Waimea Canyon. This leads up to Koke'e State Park. This road will treat you to scenic vistas of the coast while exposing glimpses of the canyon. The island of Niihau, only a short distance west of Kauai at that point, can be clearly seen from this highway. The views are remarkable!

 Truly Amazing!

We spent a fair amount of time lounging in the resort lagoon & pools which were walking distance from our room. This is a beautiful resort!

Kilauea Lighthouse | Kilauea Point was established in 1913, and was the landfall light for ships arriving in Hawaii from the Orient. Not only is Kilauea Point Lighthouse an historic treasure, it is also the main source of revenue for many of the islanders on Kauai, Hawaii. Many businesses rely on the tourist money, and the lighthouse is one of the biggest draws in the area, bringing in thousands of visitors each year.

 Wedge-Tailed Shearwater | Brown Booby

Our room is at the far left corner of this picture!! | Mateo had the most fun at this beach! The waves were high & a little dangerous. | Shipwreck Beach

Mom tried to pick this "little" guy up with her hands!-Yikes | Beautiful Alexa!! | Memories
