S: Lake Mohonk Mountain My Summers 1964-1967

FC: Lake Mohonk | 2012

I wanted to give you something that has been a meaningful part of my life. For four years in high school, I would leave from Lakeland, Florida and ride a bus for 36 hrs to New York City, change buses at Port Authority and ride another hour and a half to New Paltz, NY, and Lake Mohonk. I spent four wonderful, exciting and memorable summers here. I had summer romances and many first time experiences. I also learned the importance of hard work. Lake Mohonk provided the foundation of my work ethic and I learned how to be responsible. As you view these pages, I hope you sense the impact Mohonk has had on my life. While I gave up my summers, my baseball, and fun in the Florida sun; looking back I would not trade those four summers for anything.

 Skytop

One touch of nature makes the whole world kin. -William Shakespeare

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

The photos on the opposite page represent special places to me at Mohonk. Starting with the top left: The Stables where I lived and cleaned the horse stalls every morning. The path from the stables to the dining hall. Across the road. Up the hill to the employee dining room. My room at the top of the stairs above the stables. The stairs up to my room. The boat dock where I worked as part of the Activities Staff for three years. The top of the porch where I dove into the lake, as part of the July 4th Celebration; 80+ feet. The Picnic Lodge where the employees would gather after work, dance and listen to music from a real juke box playing 45s.

Lilly Pond on the road To Skytop

 High Falls, New York

Never a day passes but that I do myself the honor to commune with some of nature's varied forms. -George Washington Carver

 The Labyrinth

Go and walk with Nature; thou wilt find Full many a gem in her enchanted cup. -Isaac McLellan

As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can. -John Muir

I hope you have a feeling for how important a part of my life Mohonk has been, and how much this trip back after almost 40 years meant to me.
