S: MAUI July 2012

BC: McKay's Sharun's West's

We left Edmonton on July 2nd, 2012 at 1:50 pm and flew to Vancouver, then landed in Maui at 9:55 pm which was 1:55 am Edmonton time.

We stayed in South Kihei at a resort called Kihei Akaki. It was right across from Kamaole Beach 2. I would definitely stay there again because the location was perfect. It also had two pools for us to cool down in. The temperature was between 28 and 30 degrees for the full three weeks. On the right was our backyard.

Snorkeling with the turtles was amazing....we were inches away from them. One actually ran into Jordan.

We saw all kinds of different fish, turtles and coral. It was very cool....a little scary too...it's a big ocean.!!

THE BEACHES IN MAUI.......Big Beach was the kids favorite by far....not mine. Because of the shore break, the lifeguards very graciously gave us warnings, every hour or so, that it is VERY DANGEROUS for beginners....many 'life altering' injuries occur. We also went to many other beautiful beaches including Kamaole 11, Ula, White Rock, Black Rock, Poolenalena and Black Sand.

I can't describe the smell of the ocean or the sound of the waves. It is nothing that you could ever imagine. I video taped the sounds at Big Beach one day so that I could sit at my computer and listen to it.

I couldn't believe how salty the water was. To actually taste it and sometimes swallow it was disgusting. It literally tasted like you were gargling salt water....yuk!

The kids really loved the beaches. Playing in the water was just so much fun for them. It was nice because they're all at an age now that you really don't have to watch them 24-7. Kaleb is an awesome swimmer. I was really impressed with all of them.

LAHAINA | We took a day off of the beaches and visited Lahaina. It is a great little town. We ate at Bubba Gumps, shopped and sat under a HUGE banyan tree....a picture says a thousand words.

HALEAKALA We made the drive up the volcano twice. The first time we visited it during the day, it was 9 degrees.....we couldn't believe how cold it was. Aidan forgot a hoodie. It was an incredible drive...white knuckles on some parts...it was like you were driving off the road, into the clouds. Aidan, Kaleb, Scott, Jeff and I also made the drive up to the volcano at 2:30 am to see the sunrise. We thought that we were so early but the upper parking lot was full when we arrived. To watch the sunrise come over the clouds was an incredible sight. People were singing.

 Very Scary!!!!

 Walking on Clouds...amazing

ZIPLINING | We all decided to take a chance and go ziplining....it was pretty cool......I was proud of everyone.

Quinn, Scott and Jeff took a ferry to the Island of Lanai and golfed at two beautiful courses. The Ocean (The Challenge) and The Mountain (The Experience). They had a lot of fun and only one incident. Quinn chipped his tooth or should I say broke (a good quarter of it) eating a cherry. He bit down on the pit....thank goodness it wasn't a front tooth and it didn't cause him too much discomfort.

 The Island of Lanai

 Dolphin

Some of us enjoyed the dolphin cruise more than others :). We saw a pod of at least 200 dolphins. | Cruise

ROAD TO HANA What a crazy drive Below is a picture of how wide the road was...tell me how 2 cars could pass on this road?

We stopped for lunch and a little break. We watched the wind surfers and visited....Quinn read a book....for a guy that doesn't pick up a book during the year...he did pretty good. He read five in three weeks!

We went on a 7 km hike....was WELL worth it. It started off with Seven Sacred Pools but it was closed due to high water levels, a banyan tree, then a bamboo forest...incredible and ended with a breath taking waterfall. (next page)

 PIPIWAI TRAIL ROAD TO HANA

 Seven Sacred Pools

 Banyan Tree

 Waimoku Falls

 Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach is all black volcano rock formed from rapid cooling of flowing lava. The beach is full of smooth black pebbles. We went inside a lava tube and saw some blow holes. Pretty cool and nothing like I have ever seen before.

It was so beautiful to see a rainbow on the Road to Hana.....we looked to our left....well...everyone except Quinn...he had to watch the NARROW road....and saw the cliffs and looked to our right and in the middle of the ocean was the other end of the rainbow right above a rock. Very cool.

Twin Falls.....great place to stop. There was two waterfalls. The lower falls...Quinn and the kids jumped off the cliff and the other we all got to swim under it.

The boys wanted to swim in any water that they found.

These were taken at Kamaole Beach 2 right across from our condo.

There were so many beautiful sunsets. It was hard not to put them all in the book.

Kaleb's favorite past time was catching ANY creepy crawly thing and bringing them into the condo. He caught geckos (black, white, tailed, no tailed...did you know that tail less geckos get bullied by other geckos??), spiders, snails, starfish, centipedes and crabs.

Black Rock Beach....jumping off the cliff..... | Jordan | Aidan | Andrea

 Julie | Kaleb | Quinn

 O Canada

We had a lot of fun...spent three full weeks in Maui and we could have stayed longer....except we really missed our family and Angus and Bruce.
