1: From July 26 to Aug 1, 2012 Maureen Dinner and Morris Kinast hiked Mt Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route. Simply put, the trek was difficult and daunting, and the experience was Divine. | Day 1: Drive from Moshi (3,000 ft) to Machame Gate (6,000 ft) and then hike to Machame Camp (10,000 ft) Distance: 11.3 miles

4: The Spectacular Rain Forest

9: Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia Thomsonil)

10: End of first day of hiking. Arrive at Machame Camp.

11: Day 2: Hike from Machame Camp (10,000 ft) to Shira Camp (12,600) 5.6 miles

17: As we ascent to Shira Camp we leave the rainforest and enter the heathers and moorlands with their wonderful wildflowers.

35: Day 4 Hike from Barranco Camp (12,700 ft) to Karanga Camp (13,200 ft). We start by climbing the Barranco Wall, a very steep, narrow grade. Then we go down into the Baranco Valley and up the other side of the valley to the top where the Karanga Camp is located. | Barranco Wall

46: Day 5: Ascent from Karanga Camp (13,200 ft) to Barafu Camp ( 15,300 ft)

47: Distance: 2.2 miles

49: Day 5: We arrive at Barafu (15,300 ft) in the early afternoon. After lunch we sleep until 6 pm. We have dinner and then rest and prepare for our overnight hike to the summit. We depart at 10:20 pm. It is a very long ascent, uphill the entire way. Pole, pole! (slow) Stella Point: 18,870 ft Uhuru Peak: 19,340 ft Distance: 3 miles

60: Day 6: After summiting we return to Barafu Camp. After dinner we hike from Barafu to Millenium Camp (12,530 ft). On Day 7 in morning we say goodbye to our wonderful team of guides, cook, and porters and depart for the park exit through the rain forest.
