FC: Paris and the Loire Valley July 16-29, 2011

This book is a record of our travels to Paris and the chateaux of the Touraine Region of the Loire Valley. Tours, Amboise and Chinon were our destinations as we bicycled through the region, marveling at vineyards, fields of sunflowers, old forests, villages, rivers and of course, chateaux of all sizes. We hope that perusing the photos and stories of this book will inspire you to plan your own adventure. Sharon and Manojlo 2011

July 17, 2011 Day 1 Paris, France | Arrived in Paris in the morning and spent the rest of the day walking along the Seine and touring St Germaine des Pres and St Chapelle Churches. | Les Bateaux Mouches | St Germaine des Pres Church Oldest Church in Paris and built on the former site of the pagan goddess Isis | Our hotel door | Notre Dame - just a few blcoks from our hotel | Pont des Arts, filled with locks | St. Chapelle Church, built in the 12th century. Its 15 stained glass windows are unbelievably beautiful.

July 18, 2011 Day 2 Paris, France | Spent the day riding the Hop On-Hop Off bus to see all of the sights of Paris. Visited Invalides, the Eiffel Tower, climbed the Arc of Triumph, walked along the Champs Elysees, visited the Sorbonne, wandered through the Cluny Museum and the Luxemburg Gardens.

July 19, 2011 Day 3 Paris, France It rained hard all day. We spent most of the day in the Musee D'Orsay and then rode the Hop On-Hop Off to keep dry. Look at the sky in these pictures.

July 20, 2011 Tours Bike Day 1 | We made our way to the train station early in the morning to catch the TVG to Tours. We stayed at Hotel L'Adress, right in the old medieval section of the city and spent the rest of the day touring the medieval part of Tours. | The two remaining towers from the medieval church of St. Martin: Tour Charlemagne and the Clock Tower. | Above is St Gatien Church and below is the cloister attached to the church. Both medieval and renaissance architecture can be seen in the cloister.

July 21, 2011 Bike Day 2: Tours to Amboise | Sights on the way to Amboise: Loire River, fields and forest, small chateaux, Pont Wilson and the Chateau d'Amboise. | Our Home for 2 days:

Day 2 Biking: Chateau d'Amboise | Hotel de Clos, Amboise

July 22, 2011 Bike Day 3 Chateau Chennonceau

These people know how to do fireplaces! and ceilings. It rained for much of the day so the trip back to Amboise was very wet.

Biking Day 3 continued When we got back from Chateau Chennonceau, the rain stopped and the sunshine began to peek through the clouds. We set off to explore Chateau Close de Luce, the home of Leonardo Da Vinci in his last years.

July 23, 2011 Biking Day 4 Our trip took us to the lovely Chateau Bourdaisiere and the Prieury St. Jean de Gres. We didn't go inside either of them, as they were not open for visitors at the time or day that we arrived.

Biking Day 4, continued | The bike ride took us through quiet back roads, small towns as we crossed the Indre River several times on our journey. There was no rain that day. We arrived at our destination quite early in the day so we decided to take the extra loop to see ChateauVillandry. Unfortunately, we left our directions in our suitcases which had not yet arrived at our hotel. Using the directions from the hotel owner, we rode, uphill, towards the chateau. Two and a half hours later, we still had not arrived and it would be another 13 kms to Villandry. We decided to head back to our hotel. Thank goodness it was mostly downhill. We biked 90 kms that day.

Hotel Moulin de Fleury This small, family-owned inn was a former mill, situated on the River Indre. We had a traditional, French meal: 5 courses with wine. The restaurant was recommended in our guide book and native French diners were eating there that evening.

July 24, 2011 Bike Day 5 to Chinon We left Moulin de Fleury on a day with no rain, with the sun showing its face for most of the day. Major destinations today included Chateau D'Azuy Rideau, Chateau Usse, and the town of Chinon which would be our base for the last 2 days of the trip.

Chateau Usse - Sleeping Beauty Castle | Chateau D'Azuy Rideau

Chinon July 24 and 25, 2011 We spent the last part of our bike trip in Chinon. Day 6 of our trip had one more day of cycling but it was raining so we decided to forgo that last cycling day. We learned a lot about Joan of Arc while visiting the Chateau de Chinon

Hotel Agnes Sorrel | Street scenes from Chinon.

July 26, 2011 Paris We returned to Paris by train and arrived around noon. We spent the rest of the day at Monmartre, the Sacre Coeur and taking a long walk along the Seine to the Louvre. | Monmartre | Sacre Coeur Cathedral | Climbed to the top of the dome | A mime in Monmartre | A beach along the Seine | In the courtyard of the Louvre

July 27, 2011 Versailles We took the train to Versailles, where we toured the palace, the Grand Trianon, the Petite Trianon and Marie Antoinette's Hamlet. Overwhelming - no wonder the populace revolted.

Building from medieval times | July 28, 2011 Marais Walk | Hotel Bethune de Sully | Hotel de Sens | Hotel de Ville | Place de la Bastille | Place de Voges | National Archives | We had the best falafels on this walk!

Last Evening in Paris July 28, 2011 What a trip! The memories that we have will last a lifetime. This book will help to keep the memories from fading.
