BC: Story by Candy Yuen

FC: Poor?! Happy?!

This is a Y's China Service Project of YMCA (Hong Kong). I joined it as a volunteer for almost one year. The service location is Wu Zhou of Guang Xi. Guang Xi is located at the southern China, the full name is Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. While Wu Zhou is located at the middle east part of Guang Xi.

The works of hardening of the road was in progress, so that vehicles could not be driven in, and we need to go to our destination together with the goods and materials for about one hour by foot.

The children lined both sides of the road and were saying "welcome welcome" repeatedly. Thier voices were beautiful and seemed still hovering around my ears.

The children were very happy and curious when we arrived. | The school house was very old and broken. | The roof was not sealed tightly, leakage would be occured in rainy days. | This was a danger building. The students could take rest but not attend classes here.

We were preparing the latter performance and mass games. The children were peeping our rehersal.

Show Time~ | Giving candies to the children. | They seemed enjoying.

After delivered the cotton candies, we unwrapped the packing and ate the candies together. | They were also taught to love and protect our environment. We were embraced by them because we were retrieving the candies packages.

 The candies packages.

Teaching children to fold simple paper aeroplanes. Everybody showed their masterpieces.

Lunch Time | They were peeping us again.

Leisure Time | Have you seen a rock table tennis table? No net! | The children queued up to play table tennis with us. They are so gentlemen. They passed the board to the next after played for a while whatever win or lose. So that more children could play with us.

"Eagle catching chickens" | "A train going through a tunnel"

"Sticky Sugar Beans" Children 'sticked' together in the number as showed. | Good friends? No way~ | Mass Game

A relay running race | Passing a ball | "Two People Three Legs"

When you just take the camera out, you will be enclosed by the children.

Team signature | They all have camera sensitive syndrome.

Their school house was simple and crude. Some of the desks and the chairs were broken. We saw two of them had no chair and stood through out the lessons.

 somehow these are antiques?!

 lego?!

School in the mountain area .

This is the lunch box prepared by a 5-year-old student. His lunch was boiled yellow beans. | This was the lunch of several teachers. They had their lunch in this hut everyday.

We visited farming families. They all were hospitable people.

This was a big family, actually these were two families. The hosts were brothers. In general, they ate meat once every two weeks. But they greeted us with two dishes of meat. It was possible that the next meal with meat was one month later. | The little girl was preparing "tea" for us. She made a fire with firewood and boiled some manioc (the plant likes potato but not sweet and harder in texture). We enjoyed the "tea".

We brought some noodles and commodities as presents to them. They seemed not known bowl noodle before. We taught them how to make it to eat. They seemed enjoyed it especially this kid. | Have you seen the real straw hut likes the folktale of The Three Little Pigs?

This farming family was distributed this area for greens, and another areas for the manioc. | I was told about the name of the vegatables. But I forgot all. The yield of the products was small, this was not a business since this was not enough for the family to eat.

The soil was dry and barren in this county, it did not fit to farm many of the agricultural products except manioc.

Children were enthusiastically and speedy to climb up the tree and take off some starfruits to us.

Do you think there is a whale swimming on the hill?

One of the item of the Y's China Service Project is donation of desks and chairs to the schools with need in Wu Zhou. It was rainy the day before we visited. The students moved the new deaks and chairs away and not let them get wet. They were moving them back to school on the day we visited.

The old and broken desks and chairs were replaced in these schools. The school principals presented a flag to YMCA.

When we left, children lined both sides of the road again and said farewell to us.
