S: Our Trip to Puerto Rico 2011

FC: Our Trip to Puerto Rico 2011

January in Wisconsin We were craving warmth and signs of life... | We found both in San Juan

Our hotel offered plenty to experience.

But we spent most of our time enjoying the ocean. | Wet | & | Wild

Enjoyed the tranquility of the ocean

Loved the Architecture of the old Spanish buildings

One of the places we wanted to see is the oldest fort in the Americas - San Felipe del Morro, Construction began in 1539 and went through several phases of building over the next 248 years - the external walls of El Morro swallowing the original construction as the site grew larger. The fort is six stories tall, with 140 ft high walls that are 18 ft thick in some areas.

The centuries old stone, with a vivid backdrop of blue sky and green grass, was breathtaking.

El Morro - poised at the mouth of San Juan Bay - repelled all but one attack. The picturesque sentry boxes were found all around the fort walls.

We couldn't resist checking out the incredible views.

The fortress was immense... these pictures can't begin to convey this awesome structure.

And here is how they fought off the pirates

One last sunset at the beach before heading home.
