BC: St. Lucia Vacation December 2011

FC: 2011

We began our trip on December 23,2011. It started with a flight to Salt Lake City, followed by an 11 HOUR LAYOVER! Finally, we boarded our plane for a red-eye flight to Atlanta and arrived in St. Lucia on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. | The view from our room. | He didn't last long after we ate dinner and had a few glasses of wine.

The first day we were there we met two couples from Wisconsin--Jim & Heather and Drew & Heather. Both girls were teachers and we all hit it off! We were inseparable for the remainder of the trip. | The Beach at Sandals La Toc in Castries, St. Lucia

 Heather, Heather, & I | Branden, Drew, & Jim

Pictures by the pool. Finally got it on the 3rd try!

It was so relaxing to spend the days laying by the pool, fruity drink in hand without a care in the world. We rarely knew the time or the day. We could usually be found on the pool chairs or at the swim up bar!

Each day we were there, there were short periods of rain showers. Usually, we would sit by the pool through the rain because it was still so warm. However, one of the rain storms lasted a little longer and rained a little harder than the others. | So,Heather and I waited out the storm underneath our towels.

After the rainstorm there were two rainbows that ended in the ocean right in front of our resort. They were BEAUTIFUL!!!!

BeachParty | Sandals had a Beach Party on one of the nights we were there. These performers were absolutely amazing!

Some Things We Learned: | The price of gas on the island is around $7.00 US per gallon. The ratio between St. Lucian women to men is 7 to 1. Drivers in St. Lucia drive on the LEFT side of the road! They are also very crazy drivers. They never thought twice about passing on a corner or on a hill. Branden and I both nearly had heart attacks many times because we are so used to our way of driving in the United States.

Before going to St. Lucia, we had big plans. We wanted to take in every possible excursion we could. However, once we got there we were so relaxed that we mostly stayed by the pool. We did go on one excursion--Joe Knows. With this excursion we explored the island on a small speed boat, complete with great music and yummy rum punch. We traveled south on the west side of the island. We started in the capital city of Castries and continued south to Soufriere. | A view of part of the island and the capital city of Castries.

Who Knows? Joe Knows! | The first place we visited was Marigot Bay. This was the ritzy part of the island and many stars have vacation homes here. The original Dr. Doolittle movie was also filmed here. | George Foreman's Home | Oprah's "Village" | Some of the yachts in this bay cost around $15 million!

This was taken in Marigot Bay as well. In the background there is a white house that belongs to a St. Lucian entrepreneur known as Mr. Glass. Everything Mr. Glass owns is white. His property is one of the only oceanside properties in the bay. Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington and others have offered Mr. Class large amounts of money for this property but he will not sell it.

From Marigot Bay, we continued south to Soufriere. This is where the famous Pitons are located. We were also able to see Jade Mountain. This was the resort where The Bachelor was filmed during Jake's Season. This resort costs $1,800 per night and each room only has three walls! | The water was so blue!

In the bay in front of Jade Mountain, we went snorkeling. It was amazing how florescent some of those fish are! I even saw a fish that looked like Dori only it had a rainbow tail.

The Pitons | The Pitons | At this point, my vacation was complete! These were the only things I HAD to see.

Sulphur Springs Drive-In Volcano & Mud Baths | When we got to Soufriere, the first place we visited was the volcano. There is a stream that runs through the volcano and continues down the mountain. There are many minerals found in this water and so it is thought to be very therapeutic and healing. Many people visit this mud bath frequently as a remedy for acne, arthritis, and more.

When the water came out of the volcano, the temperature was around 212 degrees. By the time it got downstream to the bath it was around 103 or 104 degrees. | This guy went all out in covering himself with the mud.

Toraille Falls in Soufriere | This is a cocoa bean plant. The majority of the cocoa beans harvested off the island go to Hersey.

 More of the Pitons!

When we left Soufriere, the local kids would climb the side of the hill. They would then jump off the cliff in hopes that the tourists would throw money into the water for them. We threw in a $10 bill and the result reminded me of feeding the fish at the local fish hatchery.

This crevice was filled with fruit bats.

These were our tour guides JR and Captain Big Willie. We enjoyed the day with them. They took good care of us and really showed us the island! | Another beautiful view!

This tunnel was used in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. There were some local children who were cliff diving off the side of it.

Branden spent many hours on this golf course! | Our crew on the last night that Branden and I were there! The girls were sitting at one end of the table and the guys were at the other. So, the couples were all split up for the picture!

We were pretty sad to go home! This was the last picture we HAD to get!
