FC: 2012 Alaskan Trip | Trip of a Lifetime
What a wonderful way to start any vacation. We drove to Bettendorf to stay with Josh, Laura, Ryan, Emily and Hailey on June 8th. Our plane wasn't to leave until Saturday after lunch. Barney and I were able to go watch Emily and Ryan's swimming lessons. What cute little fish.....
Saturday we were able to relax for a little while watching the grandchildren at swimming lessons.
Our First night in | Fairbanks
Alaska | Arrived June 8, 2012 | Fairbanks had great food and places to see!
Our journey began June 9th . We flew out of Moline and landed almost at midnight in Fairbanks, Alaska. Melissa met us at the airport and took us to a motel. Due to the vastness of the area, it takes hours to travel a short distance. She and Allen were able to share their state, home and passion with us while we toured this beautiful area.
Interior of Alaska | We traveled the Alaskan Highway in a motor home. Due to the enormous wind shield, we were able to see mountains covered in snow, waterfalls close enough to touch, and ice covered lakes as we journeyed down to Valdez. Even though it rained the entire trip, the Smiths and Barnes camped snuggled between the snow capped mountains and the marina. What an experience to awake to this amazing view.
Valdez | TOur trip to Valdez was quite memorable. We drove down with Allen, Mellisa, Jasmine (106 pounds of dog) in their new motor home. Alaska's law is so different from Iowa's. I sat in a kitchen chair between Barney and Allen. The windshield was enormous so we were able to view everything. Due to almost 24 hours of bright sunlight, construction is going on constantly. We view huge machinery almost next to us, viewed workers laying the wiring for dynamite, and drove on the permafrost or mud. But, all the while we still were able to see the mountains, glaciers and waterfalls as we drove our campsite. We learned you can camp anywhere.....
We ate at both of these "watering holes" so many times they knew what we drank and ate.
. | These were the views from the deck while we ate supper.
Allen taught Barney how to drive the 4 wheeler. We were lost in the woods for over an hour in Delta Junction, AK.
No animals came out while we were lost. Karen laughed the entire time.
 Pipeline up and close
Fairbanks | We found Gold | June 2012
We panned for Gold. Karen found $18 worth of gold and Barney $12. We know they measured and added it to each bag.
BONDI BEACH is one of Australia's most famous beaches and among the world's most well-known beaches. The beach is roughly a kilometer long and is located on the east coast of Australia and is a suburb of the city of Sydney. | North Pole, Alaska Santa had the day off. The reindeer were eating outside.
 Rikka's Roadhouse
 Final Day in Alaska...
