FC: Our Travels 2011
Sunday, February 20 - Tuesday, February 22, 2011 | Road Trip ~ Rhode Island | Downtown Providence | The State Building | Marriott Renaissance
TEMPLE | restaurant & lounge in a historic Masonic temple
Home to spectacular coastal scenery, awe-inspiring architecture, a thriving downtown waterfront, and welcoming hospitality, Newport, Rhode Island is considered by many to be a shining gem in the coastal crown of new England.
We stayed at Newport Marriott Hotel and Spa, located in historic Newport - just minutes from the mansions, shops, and beaches.
The Newport Mansion Tour The Elms (1901) Summer retreat of Edward and Heminie Berwind
What's most remarkable is the history after Julia Berwind died. The house fell into disrepair and was marked for demolition. A nephew, who didn't want the estate, held an auction and sold everything in the house - then scheduled the wrecking ball, so a 1960's developer could put in a subdivision! With a lot of fight, the Newport Preservation Society saved the mansion from demolition.
The Breakers (1895) The 70 room summer estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt
Amazed by the grandeur of the Gilded Age
The Marble House (1892) | The home where Alva Vanderbilt hosted rallies for "Votes for Women."
The Chinese Tea House is on the property of the Marble House. Both were given to Alva as her 39th birthday present.
 Cliff Walk

 being silly
Our home for the week was a beautiful condo in the gated Truman Annex. Although we spent little time indoors, we certainly enjoyed the legendary Key West sunsets from our balcony each night.
Walking around "Margaritaville"... enjoying the local culture.
 "Laughter is an instant vacation.."

As the bay is protected on both sides, the water here is calm. The beach was lined with sea grape trees and coconut trees - which provided the perfect shade.
Orient Bay is situated in the north-eastern part of the island. It's one of the island's largest and most popular beaches.
Grand Case Foodies find paradise on Grand Case Beach, a picturesque fishing village that is lined with restaurants and eateries known as lolos.
Happy Bay This is the quintessential tropical beach. Accessible only by a 10-minute hike through the hills, Happy Bay has managed to preserve its untouched charm,
