Danny Hito ‘11 | Sara, You always remember that you are not just teaching students, but kids. You seem to always know that a little good natured fun can go a long way towards making your students want to learn and after all your years of teaching, you still seem to like the job and the kids. In this, you are a role-model to us all. Casey Teague | Dear Sara, Congratulations on your retirement. You definitely deserve it! You have put up with plenty of wild (but loving and funny) seniors. Your presence on campus will be missed! I hope retirement brings all you could hope for. Best Wishes Jessica Moore

9: Sara, It's been a pleasure and a privilege working with you for the past 11 years. You were the department chair who approved hiring me back then, so I owe you a particular debt. You are a very positive woman who is respectful of everyone. You’re funny and fun to be with. You have a genuine fondness for your students, and they appreciate it. Students invariably end up loving you. Many of them return years after graduation to tell you how they are doing, and how much your encouragement helped them on their path. You have always preferred working with the average student, as opposed to the high achieving student, the ones who need encouragement the most, and you’ve been successful in helping them gain better skills, more positive outlooks, and greater self regard. You’re a smart and talented woman who is also low-key. You doesn't toot your own horn, but you have plenty to be proud of. You are a philosophy major, a jazz singer, and a warm and welcoming person. You’re also one of the best looking 60-something woman I know! When you told me you were retiring this year, I was shocked, because I thought you were 10 years younger than you are. You are graceful in aging, in communicating to your students and your peers, and in supporting the goals of our high school. I will miss your calm and steady outlook, and your vast wealth of experience. I know you will enjoy retirement--spending more time with your husband and daughters and new baby granddaughters--but we will all miss you here. Sincerely, Patsy Fergusson | SARA IRAHETA IS AMAZING | Sara You are the calm centered person in our department. Everyone, students and colleagues alike, respond to this. Could it be all that jazz you’ve listened to? It's nice to have a mellow person teaching you what you need to know. Calm, mellow, kind—You definitely show true Bearcat traits. Not one to broadcast her talents, you also have an amazing ability to knit. In our group project a few years ago, your squares were perfection. It's great that, with this ability, you will have enough free time to outfit her new, cute granddaughters. Hey, you hired me! Another reason to appreciate you. Thanks for all you do! Jane McCabe

10: Sara, You are an engaging and thoughtful teacher who challenges your students and are one of the few teachers to assign a lot of writing to your classes. Students complete a weekly writing task that asks them to analyze an essay and respond to it. You use contemporary topics that challenge the reader. One student even nominated you for an award from San Jose State University as the most influential teacher he had at San Mateo High School. As for your friendship, I value the endless lunch hours we have talked about the school, students, our own children, and spouses. You have insight, intelligence, and humor. I will miss you. Ann Pappas | Dear Ms. Iraheta, You have been such an inspiration to me. From the moment I walked though your door my life was changed. You have taught me so much about writing structure and types of literature, not to mention everything we learned about Shakespeare. I love learning about the literary arts, and you class was always one of my favorites. Not only were your lectures riveting and exciting, you were always a snazzy dresser to boot! I’ve had more fun in English this year than I ever though I could. Thank you once again for all of the knowledge you’ve imparted upon me this year. When I go off to college I will always remember you as a paragon of what a teacher should be. What a tragedy that you will be leaving this year, never again to purge students of their ignorance. Enjoy retirement Sincerely Rebecca Shepler | Haaaay Mrs. Iraheta Thanks for being such a great teacher the 2 years I’ve had you! I hope you have a great life. See you soon cutie! Thanks again! Love Ginza Smith ‘11

13: Dear Ms. Iraheta, I can’t believe time flew by so fast! It seemed like only yesterday that I was sitting in your English class doing a Friday Write, which by the way helped improve my writing skills significantly and allowed me to do quite well on my writing assignments in college. I have always had difficulties with reading and writing, but you made your class fun and enjoyable. Thank you so much for giving me a great senior year in high school and thanks you for always being there for me!
